Valentina Debuts at LALIFF; Nava Mau Leads Features Jury

The Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) is set to kick off its prestigious 25th edition with the dramedy “Valentina.” Directed by Tatti Ribeiro and executive produced by Jessica Alba and Tracey Nyberg, this engaging film captures the essence of life at the U.S.-Mexico border. Notably, Nava Mau, recognized from “Baby Reindeer,” will head the features jury, marking another significant highlight of this annual celebration of Latino culture and storytelling.

The Opening Night: ‘Valentina’

“Valentina,” featuring Keyla Monterroso Mejia, presents a poignant yet humorous look at life in a bustling border town. Set against the U.S.-Mexico border, the film explores the world of Valentina as she deals with parking tickets, precarious gig jobs, and other challenges of young adulthood. This cinematic debut from Tatti Ribeiro combines elements of documentary and fiction, integrating real-world news clips and political commentary to vividly depict the multifaceted nature of border life. Jessica Alba and Tracey Nyberg, at the helm of executive production, further amplify the narrative’s depth and reach.

A Pioneering Film Festival

LALIFF, a prime initiative of the Latino Film Institute, is celebrating its 25th anniversary from May 27-31 at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Over the years, the festival has spotlighted Latino filmmakers and storytellers, offering a platform for voices like Edward James Olmos, Guillermo del Toro, and Eva Longoria. This year promises to continue that tradition by elevating culturally rich narratives and honoring the legacy it has built.

Nava Mau Leads the Features Jury

The festival’s dedication to fresh perspectives is underscored by Nava Mau’s role as head of the features jury. An Emmy-nominated and Independent Spirit Award-winning talent, Mau brings a wealth of experience and advocacy to the position. Her involvement is aligned with LALIFF’s mission to champion diverse viewpoints that are shaping the future of film and television.

New Initiatives and Awards

As LALIFF continues to evolve, it remains an Academy Award–qualifying festival, offering filmmakers the chance for Oscar consideration in specific categories. This year, the addition of the Adelante Award for Industry recognizes individuals with substantial contributions to the entertainment sector. Such initiatives reflect the festival’s ongoing commitment to fostering opportunities and celebrating achievements within the Latino community.

Moreover, LALIFF introduces flexible ticket bundles, allowing attendees greater access and engagement with the festival’s offerings. As Diana Cadavid, director of industry programs, notes, these bundles aim to enrich audience experience by providing varied opportunities for participation in screenings, discussions, and networking events.

In this landmark year, LALIFF not only celebrates its storied past but also looks ahead, reinforcing its role as a vital hub for Latino culture and cinematic excellence.
