The U.K. and Ireland box office has reached an impressive recovery milestone in 2025, amassing £1.07 billion ($1.45 billion). This represents a notable 1% rise from the previous year, marking the best box office performance since the onset of the pandemic. Two major films played a pivotal role in this achievement: “A Minecraft Movie” and “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy,” which both emerged as top contenders in the cinematic landscape. The performance not only highlights the sector’s resilience but also reaffirms the continued appeal of cinematic experiences in these regions.
A Comeback for the Ages
Warner Bros.’ “A Minecraft Movie” dominated the annual box office chart, grossing $76.9 million, closely followed by Universal’s “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” with $62.7 million. Universal’s “Wicked: For Good,” still captivating audiences, took third place, earning $62 million. Although the overall figure remains 21% shy of 2019’s pre-pandemic levels, the year marks the third straight one exceeding $1.43 billion, setting the U.K. and Ireland apart favorably against many European counterparts.
Industry Growth and Diversity
The year 2025 showcased growth with a record number of 224 films receiving saturation releases across more than 250 cinemas, up from 200 the year prior. This surge is indicative of the industry rebounding from the setbacks caused by COVID-19 and the Hollywood strikes. Universal made a significant mark by leading distributor standings with a 25.1% market share and a total gross of $363.5 million from 35 new releases. Disney and Warner Bros. took the second and third spots, respectively.
Expanding Horizons and Local Contributions
The territories welcomed the addition of 11 new and refurbished cinemas, featuring over 80 screens in total, with notable contributions from Vue, Odeon, and Everyman. Event cinema remained a robust segment, generating $59.4 million, making it the second-best year behind 2019. In terms of local productions, “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” was a standout, leading local box office charts, contributing to the $272.7 million total revenue from British and Irish films.
Audience Returns and Market Resilience
According to Phil Clapp, chief executive of the U.K. Cinema Association, “Although it saw only a small year-on-year increase in box office, 2025 marked a significant further step in the sector’s recovery following the challenges of recent years.” Reflecting on this positive trend, Andy Leyshon, chief executive of the Film Distributors’ Association, remarked, “Having now witnessed a healthy level of theatrical stability, it is evident that the unique visual pleasure of a visit to the cinema remains the leading out-of-home entertainment choice for audiences.”
