In a parody performance that thrilled audiences, Saturday Night Live‘s cold open featured a humorously oblivious Donald Trump, ignoring an Oval Office emergency to complain about Zohran Mamdani‘s electoral victory. This sketch cleverly blended satire with current events, reflecting the political landscape’s absurdities.
During this SNL segment, Trump, played by James Austin Johnson, seemed utterly unfazed by a man fainting in the Oval Office. As aides rushed to assist, Trump used the incident as an opportunity to divert his attention towards political grievances, specifically targeting New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and other Democratic election winners.
“I think my plan is pretty normal: stand here and stare like a sociopath,” he quipped, embodying the character with comedic precision. This remark, made while others attended to the man, captured the air of indifference with a striking visual that quickly went viral. He even jokingly compared his lack of action to faking assistance when someone drops something.
Ignoring the minor crisis, the character continued to vent: “The Democrats won. The lamestream media called the elections a rebuke of Trump. Joke’s on them: they’re Stephen Miller’s policies.” Here, the humor lay in the irony and critique of political dynamics.
Among his many grievances, Trump fixated on Mamdani’s victory: “I can’t believe they elected Mamdani. We like to say ‘Mamdani!’ I’m torn because I like a winner, but I’m not crazy about a Muslim. Maybe he’ll convert, right? We’ll put him in line behind ‘Ursha’ Vance,” he remarked, showcasing a blend of humor and political satire. His deliberate mispronunciation added to the comedic effect.
In the sketch, Trump proceeded to address ongoing issues like consumer dissatisfaction due to rising grocery prices and the lengthy government shutdown. “I promised grocery prices would plummet, and they did: they plummeted straight up! But people are saying, ‘Sir, how will I afford my Thanksgiving turkey for my family?’ Well, the good news is your family isn’t coming because all the planes are gone,” he joked, highlighting the absurdity with tongue-in-cheek humor. His administration’s decision to cut ten percent of flights was labeled as “killing two birds with another bird.”
As the fainted individual recovered, the comedic Trump character handed him what he called an “MRI punch card,” adding, “One more and the next one’s free!” This finale punctuated the cold open with sharp, memorable wit, leaving audiences entertained and engaged.
