Tokyo Broadcasting System Acquires Stake in Legendary's Japanese Collaboration

Legendary Entertainment, renowned for hits like “Dune” and the “Godzilla” series, is entering a transformative phase by selling a minority stake to the Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS). This strategic move promises to enhance collaboration on Japanese intellectual property (IP) and expand Legendary’s reach into Asian markets. The alliance underscores the growing trend of global partnerships in the entertainment industry, where cross-cultural content is gaining traction among diverse audiences.

TBS Invests in Legendary Entertainment

The Tokyo Broadcasting System, a major player in Japan’s media landscape, has strategically acquired a $150 million minority stake in Legendary Entertainment. The deal, led by Legendary’s CEO Josh Grode and chief creative officer Mary Parent, is poised to create synergies that benefit both parties. Despite the new stake, the majority ownership remains with Legendary’s leadership and Apollo Funds. The partnership is designed to be flexible, allowing non-exclusive collaborations across various content arenas.

According to Grode, “For decades, TBS has played a central role working with all members of the creative ecosystem in Japan, from multiple publishers to animators to writers and artists. Its position within the local market presents exciting opportunities for collaboration.”

Leveraging Japanese Intellectual Property

One of the core benefits of this partnership for Legendary is access to TBS’s extensive portfolio, including production company The Seven, known for producing series like Netflix‘s “Alice in Borderland” and “Yu Yu Hakusho.” Legendary has a rich history of developing content rooted in Japanese IP, exemplified by projects such as “Godzilla x Kong: Supernova,” “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” and the recently completed “Street Fighter.” By tapping into TBS’s resources, Legendary can further amplify the global reach of its content.

Exciting Prospects for Global Expansion

Yayoi Nakatani, board director and chief growth officer of TBS Holdings, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “We are thrilled to partner with Legendary, a world-class studio with a remarkable track record of history-making global hits. Legendary’s exceptional creativity and their proven ability to build and expand IPs into worldwide franchises will be an indispensable driving force to our global strategy.”

This collaboration is well-positioned to enhance the global appeal of TBS’s Japanese intellectual property by leveraging Legendary’s expertise in creating successful franchises. By working together, the companies aim to honor the creative origins of their IPs while expanding their footprints in the global entertainment market.
