Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny's Silent Strategy Against Trump

Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny have not only established themselves as two of the biggest names in music but have also found themselves at the center of political provocations from Donald Trump and his administration. As social media becomes an increasingly potent tool for communication, both artists have adopted a quiet yet strategic approach to address the use of their music in controversial political contexts.

Political Manipulation on Social Media

Since Trump began his second term, his administration has utilized social media to advance its communication strategy. This often includes provocative clips that embrace internet culture while trivializing critical issues such as immigration and foreign policy. Many artists, including Olivia Rodrigo, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, and Noah Kahan, have voiced their disapproval upon discovering their music used without permission in such videos. Recently, the White House appears to have aimed provocations squarely at Swift and Bad Bunny.

Coy Responses from Swift and Bad Bunny

On July 30, the official White House TikTok account featured Bad Bunny’s track “La Mudanza” in a video that celebrated deportations, presenting a particularly tone-deaf take on immigration policy. Shortly after, Team Trump shared a video using Swift’s song “August,” captioned with a deliberate provocation: “I’m sure Taylor Swift is going to be super excited we used her song.” Moreover, a subsequent post mocked Swift’s Red album by suggesting it was about the color of the Republican Party.

Rather than publicly denouncing these appropriations, both artists quietly removed their songs from the videos featured on the Trump administration’s accounts. Whether through TikTok features or direct outreach, their actions demonstrate a deliberate choice to refrain from amplifying the administration’s messaging. By keeping their music available for use by other accounts, they have adopted a smart strategy that distances them from Trump’s provocative tactics.

The Debate on Celebrity Responsibility

Some commentators argue that celebrities bear a responsibility to denounce actions they find objectionable, particularly when their platforms have such immense reach. Bad Bunny has long been vocal about his political beliefs, taking on major platforms to promote pro-immigration stances and to criticize Trump’s policies. During the 2026 Grammys, he passionately stated, “ICE out,” emphasizing the human rights of immigrants.

When his music was used in the White House TikTok, there was speculation that he might publicly address the appropriation. However, engaging in the conversation could inadvertently grant the administration the attention it seeks. Previous criticisms from other artists, like Rodrigo and Grande, have only led to backlash from the administration, which has used their statements as opportunities to further stoke division.

Swift’s Stance Against Right-Wing Provocations

Swift has similarly faced ongoing manipulations of her music by the Trump administration. She has not publicly spoken about these instances but has vocally criticized Trump’s administration in the past. Her positions on issues such as racial injustice, LGBTQ+ rights, and abortion demonstrate her alignment with liberal values. Yet, despite her clear disdain for Trump’s autocratic style, she has been erroneously labeled as MAGA-aligned, particularly in the face of right-wing rhetoric.

If she were to address the use of her music in a political context, it might ultimately serve as a victory for Trump, drawing attention to his presidency—which has seen declining approval ratings. The adept approach taken by both Swift and Bad Bunny illustrates a conscious choice to avoid engaging in a dialogue that could undermine their artistic integrity while simultaneously depriving the administration of the sensational headlines they crave.
