Taiwanese Animation Triumph: Blossmoss's Enchanting Journey Unveiled

Taiwanese animation director Fish Wang, renowned for his arresting visuals and emotive storytelling, returns to the spotlight with his latest project, “Wondering Tales of Blossmoss.” Known for winning best animated short at the 2023 Sitges Film Festival, Wang now brings a feature-length film to the Taiwan Creative Content Fest (TCCF) 2025. This new endeavor continues his exploration of profound themes, set against a rich backdrop of fantasy and personal reflection.

Expanding Narratives: From Short to Feature

“Wondering Tales of Blossmoss” (Taiwan-Hong Kong-Japan-France) sees Fish Wang building on the universe he introduced in the VR animated short “Red Tail” (2022). Unlike its predecessor, this project tackles memory, loss, and the rites of passage into adulthood. Crafted to appeal to audiences aged 12 and above, it blends humor with philosophical depth, offering a narrative that is both whimsical and introspective.

The story poses a compelling question: does life’s trauma lead to growth or become a weight to bear? This universal theme is brought to life through a collaboration with Hong Kong screenwriter Toe Yuen and co-producer Polly Yeung, helping to forge crucial connections with partners in Japan and France.

A Global Endeavor with Local Roots

The project, still in early development, has been selected for the TCCF Pitching program in the animation category. It represents a concerted effort to elevate Taiwanese animation on the global stage. “Wondering Tales of Blossmoss” aims to showcase Fish Wang’s expansive creative vision to industry professionals and other festival participants.

Longtime collaborator Sanvy Hsieh, who also worked on “Red Tail,” highlights Wang’s integral role. “Fish isn’t just the director — he’s shaping the aesthetic identity of the entire work and providing the core narrative framework for the writing team,” says Hsieh. “My role is to ensure the story retains its consistent tone and rhythm throughout development.”

Strategic Development and International Ambitions

As the team anticipates completing the first script draft by December, Hsieh notes, “We see TCCF as a great platform to raise international visibility and open doors for future co-productions.”

For Fish Wang, the creation of “Wondering Tales of Blossmoss” since 2023 is also a testament to his desire to amplify Taiwanese animation on a global scale. “Taiwan’s animated features often struggle to be seen internationally,” Wang shares. By involving global partners from the outset, he seeks to infuse the project with broader perspectives and stronger global appeal.

Ultimately, “Wondering Tales of Blossmoss” not only charts a journey of personal growth but serves as a cultural bridge, inviting audiences worldwide to engage with its universal themes. TCCF 2025, running from Nov. 4-7 at Taipei’s Nangang Exhibition Center, promises to be an ideal venue for this ambitious and heartfelt project.
