Taiwan Announces Bold Animation Growth with Anthologies in Busan

Taiwan is stepping into the spotlight of the global animation arena, elevating its status with the unveiling of two major anthology projects at the Busan Asian Contents & Film Market. With an emphasis on creativity and international reach, Taiwan’s animation expansion marks a significant push to assert itself as a powerhouse in the industry.

Major Anthologies Fuel Animation Ambitions

The introduction of “Bliss: Beyond the Edge of Time” and “Isle Navigator: Seven Animist Tales” highlights Taiwan’s ambition to make original animation a flagship cultural export. These projects benefit from the Ministry of Culture’s T-Content Plan, which covers up to 70% of production costs, showcasing Taiwan’s commitment to animation expansion.

Beyond financial backing, this initiative underscores a broader government strategy to nurture local talent and enhance technological capabilities, strengthening Taiwan’s storytelling prowess on the global stage since 2023.

Creative Collaborations and Unique Themes

“Bliss: Beyond the Edge of Time” is a six-part sci-fi anthology blending Taiwan’s top studios, including Tellretell and Studio2 Animation Lab. By drawing on I-Ching cosmology, it tackles themes of memory, identity, love, and freedom, employing diverse visual and narrative techniques.

Executive producer Patrick Mao Huang comments, “Science fiction is not just about the future — it’s a mirror for who we are today.” The fusion of Taiwanese culture with universal tech-humanity questions gives “Bliss” a global edge while maintaining local roots.

Echoing this, Kevin Geiger, another executive producer, adds that the series uses ancient philosophy to address contemporary challenges, with each director contributing a personal yet universally relevant vision.

Exploring Culture and Mythology

Meanwhile, “Isle Navigator: Seven Animist Tales” offers a “mythical map of the island” through seven folklore-inspired shorts. Utilizing various animation techniques, this anthology delves into themes like memory, loss, fate, and rebirth, showcasing both seasoned and emerging directors.

The animation expansion reflects Taiwan’s readiness to transition from the periphery to the center of the global animation industry. The T-Content Plan fosters a sustainable ecosystem, encouraging story-rich, boundary-transcending creations.

Both productions are set to wrap up by year-end and are poised to debut on the international festival and distribution circuit, reinforcing Taiwan’s animation expansion efforts and welcoming a broader audience.
