In a notable milestone for Indian cinema, the highly anticipated film Cactus Pears, a Sundance award-winner, is set to make its debut in India. Directed by Rohan Parashuram Kanawade, this groundbreaking feature has just released its official trailer, generating excitement among movie enthusiasts. Garnering the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic at Sundance, Cactus Pears marks a significant achievement as the first Indian fiction feature to claim this honor. The film will be distributed in Indian theaters by Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media.
Global Distribution and Local Charm
As reported by Variety, Strand Releasing has acquired North American distribution rights for the film, with MPM Premium managing worldwide sales. Cactus Pears aims to resonate with international audiences while retaining its rich cultural roots.
Set in the rustic landscapes of western India, the narrative revolves around Anand, a city resident dealing with personal loss and familial duties during a 10-day mourning ritual in his ancestral village. There, he reconnects with Balya, a childhood friend facing similar societal challenges. The ensemble cast includes Bhushaan Manoj, Suraaj Suman, and Jayshri Jagtap, delivering compelling performances.

The project has garnered significant backing from prominent figures in the Indian film industry. Esteemed filmmakers Nagraj Manjule, Nikkhil Advani, Saie Tamhankar, and Vikramaditya Motwane have joined the project as executive producers, ensuring the film’s production quality and storytelling remain top-notch.
This collaboration spans across borders, developed under initiatives like the Venice Biennale College Cinema 2022-2023 and the National Film Development Corporation of India’s Marathi script camp. It was showcased at multiple international platforms, including the Film London Production Finance Market, enhancing its global reach.

The film is an international effort, produced by Neeraj Churi (U.K.), Mohamed Khaki (Canada), Kaushik Ray (U.K.), Naren Chandavarkar (India), Sidharth Meer (India), and Hareesh Reddypalli (India). Additional support came from co-producer Neha Kaul and actor Jim Sarbh, with Rajesh Parwatkar as the associate producer.

A Journey of Transformation
“Sabar Bonda is a tender yet powerful film, deeply rooted in its characters while speaking to something universal,” noted Daggubati. Rohan Kanawade, who transitioned from interior design to filmmaking, reflects on this transformative journey: “This film is a part of me, shaped by the people and moments that have made me who I am.”
Spirit Media, established by Daggubati in 2005, focuses on original content development, distribution, talent management, and creative brand marketing, positioning Cactus Pears for success as it opens in Indian theaters on September 19.
