Stunning New Stage Design for the Oscars Unveiled

Oscars ‘sanctuary’ stage revealed

The highly anticipated Oscars ‘sanctuary’ stage has been unveiled, showcasing a stunning green-themed design that encapsulates a serene garden courtyard. With lush overhanging branches and floral accents, the setup aims to create a tranquil ambiance for the 98th Academy Awards. This innovative staging is not just an aesthetic choice; it highlights the evolving relationship between nature and architecture, inviting A-list guests into a truly immersive experience that resonates with the theme of celebration and unity.

A Natural Retreat

The impressive design draws inspiration from the complexities of current environmental concerns. Alana Billingsley, the Oscars production designer, remarked to Vanity Fair, “There is an unsettled nature around the climate right now, and there’s just something very calming about being surrounded by architecture, but having this space for trees to grow.” This oasis-like feel aims to be a refuge amid the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

Embracing Organic Aesthetics

Billingsley further elaborated that the stage’s design is a thoughtful exploration of contrasts. “We are exploring the contrast between the organic and the rigidly architectural, and that creates the feeling that life can exist anywhere.” This duality aligns perfectly with the Oscars’ tradition of celebrating artistic expression while remaining responsive to social and environmental narratives.

A Sense of Belonging

The vision for a “sanctuary for celebration” is further echoed by production designer Misty Buckley, who noted that the design fosters an atmosphere of connection and warmth. “It’s got that gorgeous sense of place and belonging,” she shared, adding, “I think that also helps the audience feel connected and part of something, and really warm and held within the space.” The designers aimed to ensure that every guest, whether onstage or in the audience, experiences a profound sense of community.

Materials of Meaning

Shifting away from previous years’ opulent gold and sparkling decor, this year’s stage features stone, metal, and glass that contribute to its natural aesthetic. Buckley explained, “I think that our material choice this year was very much about finding materials that had a beautiful quality that the light could pass through and less about reflective surfaces.” This thoughtful choice reinforces the theme of the Oscars ‘sanctuary’ stage, providing an inviting environment for celebration.

Enhanced Security Measures

In addition to the stunning visuals, heightened security measures have been implemented for this year’s event. Authorities have established a one-mile security perimeter, enhancing the safety of all attendees amid increasing tensions across the globe. “Better” security protocols will ensure a secure environment, allowing guests to focus on the celebration ahead.

The 98th Academy Awards will air live on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at 7 p.m. ET and 4 p.m. PT, with comedian Conan O’Brien set to host this momentous evening of film and artistry.
