Sooni Taraporevala Crafts Biopic on Vicky Roy's Inspiring Journey

Celebrated screenwriter Sooni Taraporevala will bring the inspiring story of Vicky Roy to life in a new biopic titled “Street Dreams.” This ambitious project will spotlight Roy’s extraordinary journey from a street child to a globally renowned photographer. The film, produced by Mauktik Kulkarni for Nirvana Films, highlights the profound transformation of a young man who beat the odds and found his calling behind the camera.

The Vision Behind “Street Dreams”

Sooni Taraporevala, known for her work on films like “Salaam Bombay” and “Mississippi Masala,” will craft the narrative of this remarkable biopic. “Street Dreams” promises to encapsulate the incredible life of Vicky Roy, whose beginnings were marked by poverty and struggle. This collaboration with Indian-American filmmaker Ben Rekhi as consulting producer brings together a team ready to capture Roy’s inspiring saga.

From Streets to Stardom

Vicky Roy’s early life paints a vivid picture of resilience. Born in rural East India, his circumstances led him to a life of hardship in the streets of Delhi. It was there that the Salaam Baalak Trust intervened, setting him on a path that would eventually lead to photographing iconic sites like the 9/11 Memorial and earning a fellowship at MIT Media Labs. Today, Roy supports the Everyone Is Good at Something program, helping those with disabilities discover their potential.

Sooni Taraporevala’s Connection

For Sooni Taraporevala, writing this film is a personal and significant journey. “This is truly a full-circle moment for me,” she expressed, acknowledging the deep connection to “Salaam Bombay,” a film that contributed to the creation of the Salaam Baalak Trust. The opportunity to write about Roy, whom she has admired since 2009, feels both surreal and rewarding.

Producer’s Perspective and Support from the Trust

Mauktik Kulkarni, the film’s producer, is eager to bring Vicky Roy’s story to a global audience. “When I first heard about Vicky’s unbelievable story, I was inclined to believe that it was a bit of both myth and reality,” Kulkarni noted, emphasizing the importance of Taraporevala’s expertise in telling such a compelling narrative.

Sanjoy Roy, founder of the Salaam Baalak Trust, sees the film as an important milestone in the organization’s mission. “We began in 1988 with the singular mission of ensuring street children in India have access to their basic rights,” he stated. With previous successes like the Oscar-nominated short “Anuja,” the Trust continues its legacy of transforming lives and telling stories of triumph.

“Street Dreams” aims to inspire audiences worldwide, illustrating that one’s origins do not define their destiny. Through this film, both Taraporevala and Nirvana Films hope to showcase the power of perseverance and the transformative impact of the Salaam Baalak Trust’s efforts on countless lives. The project is poised to deliver a poignant and captivating cinematic experience.
