Alberto Barbera on Netflix’s Impact and Dwayne Johnson’s Oscar Potential

The Venice Film Festival remains a pivotal stage for global cinema, showcasing the finest works that captivate audiences and set the tone for awards season. At the forefront of shaping this illustrious event is Venice Chief Alberto Barbera, whose insights shed light on the festival’s relationship with platforms like Netflix, the evolving landscape of global cinema, and the potential Oscar success of unexpected contenders such as Dwayne Johnson.

Strengthening Ties with Netflix

Alberto Barbera has revealed a remarkably diverse lineup for this year’s Venice Film Festival, a testament to its reputation as a key influencer in the awards circuit. After a brief hiatus, Netflix is making a significant return with three films in competition. Barbera acknowledges that including a fourth from Edward Berger might have tipped the balance. “Most of the hotly anticipated films are in our program,” he states, underscoring the festival’s appeal for premiering notable titles.

U.S. Film Industry’s Transition

Touching on the state of the U.S. film industry, Barbera notes an ongoing transformation. While traditional studios are finding their footing post-crisis, independent and streaming sectors, particularly Netflix and Amazon, are taking the lead in producing auteur cinema. Barbera observes, “They are continuing to produce with the necessary resources,” highlighting a shift towards more niche, creative projects beyond mainstream studio output.

Global Cinema’s Diverse Landscape

Globally, cinema is experiencing both growth and challenges. According to Barbera, British films, while influenced by U.S. trends, still thrive in independent markets and co-productions, offering fresh narratives. French and Italian cinemas continue their robust presence, yet political and economic issues in regions like Southeast Asia and Latin America affect their film industries. Despite these hurdles, Barbera is optimistic about Africa’s future role in global cinema, citing its potential to cultivate new auteurs.

Dwayne Johnson’s Unexpected Oscar Buzz

On a lighter note, Barbera shares his enthusiasm for Dwayne Johnson’s performance in the film “The Smashing Machine” directed by Bennie Safdie. He describes Johnson’s portrayal alongside Emily Blunt as extraordinary, stating that their work has potential Oscar implications. Barbera reflects, “I don’t know if it will make its way to the Oscars, but I certainly think that A24 is going to go that route,” showcasing his belief in the film’s significant impact.
