Paramount Skydance is set to initiate a significant round of layoffs the week of Oct. 27, marking a critical shift under David Ellison’s leadership. These mass layoffs have long been anticipated following the Skydance Media-Paramount Global merger. Employees brace for a major restructuring intended to streamline operations and save costs.
Strategic Shift Following Merger
The expected layoffs come on the heels of the $8 billion merger between Skydance Media and Paramount Global, finalized in early August. David Ellison and his team have been preparing for cost reductions aimed at saving upwards of $2 billion. Around 2,000 positions in the U.S., along with international roles, are projected to be cut. The company had earlier set a target for these layoffs by early November but opted to proceed sooner.
Leadership’s Cost-Cutting Announcements
Shortly after the merger concluded, Jeff Shell, now president of Paramount Skydance, stated at a New York press conference that cost-cutting measures, including significant layoffs, were imminent. Paramount Skydance plans to disclose these changes in its Q3 2025 earnings report, set to be released on November 10. These moves align with industry trends as traditional media companies, including Paramount — parent company of major networks like CBS and Paramount+ — navigate downturns in advertising revenue and the shift to streaming.
Employee Numbers and Strategic Investments
As of late 2024, Paramount employed about 18,600 people globally, a number already reduced from 24,500 in 2022. Prior layoffs included a 3.5% cut in domestic staffing. In contrast, Skydance employs over 500 individuals. Amidst these preparations for job cuts, the company is still investing in new content, with recent deals securing UFC rights and a partnership with Activision for a “Call of Duty” film.
Ellison’s Ambitious Plans and Executive Changes
Beyond the imminent Paramount Skydance layoffs, David Ellison is reportedly interested in acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery, although a recent offer was declined. The Ellison family exerts significant influence over Paramount Skydance, bolstered by Larry Ellison’s financial backing. Recent executive hires include Makan Delrahim, Dane Glasgow, and Jay Askinasi, each bringing expertise to legal, product, and revenue areas respectively.
In a strategic presentation in July, the synergy between Skydance and Paramount was highlighted, showcasing potential savings identified alongside Bain & Co., especially within the linear TV segment. As the week of Oct. 27 approaches, the focus remains on how these layoffs will reshape Paramount Skydance’s future path.
