Chris Pratt has become a household name thanks to his iconic role as the goofy Andy Dwyer on NBC’s Parks and Recreation and his transformation into a major leading man in the blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy. The film not only marked a pivotal point in his career but also showcased a dramatic physical transformation as he took on the character of Peter Quill, the charismatic leader of a band of intergalactic misfits.
Auditioning for the Role
Pratt recalled feeling a strong connection to the character during his audition. “For me it felt like a perfect fit right off the bat. I felt like at my very first audition that I nailed it,” he told The Huffington Post. However, he worried about his physical appearance at the time. “I mean, I knew he had my spirit—I knew that my spirit was right. And I knew it sounded right; I just didn’t look right yet.”
Director’s Initial Hesitation
Director James Gunn initially shared some reservations, saying, “I didn’t even want to see Chris at first. He was overweight at the time, and he seemed like a comedy guy, and he didn’t think he was the right person for the role.” However, Pratt quickly changed Gunn’s mind. “But he came in, and he was doing his audition, and 20 seconds into his audition I’m like, ‘That’s the guy.’”
Documenting the Transformation
Pratt embarked on an impressive fitness journey, losing 60 pounds in just six months, and humorously documented his progress on Instagram. “Six months no beer. #GOTG Kinda douchy to post this but my brother made me,” he captioned one shirtless gym photo. This transformation not only boosted his physicality but also made him a sought-after cover star for numerous magazines.
The Range of Talent
Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige noted the stark contrast between Pratt’s comedic role in Parks and Rec and his action-packed presence in Zero Dark Thirty. “He’s a hilariously frumpy, doofy guy in Parks and Rec, and he’s an incredibly kickass ripped guy in Zero Dark Thirty and that’s pretty awesome,” Feige remarked. “That’s a big range right there.”
Looking to the Future
Unbeknownst to Pratt during his auditioning process, Marvel was considering the long-term implications of casting decisions. Feige explained, “We always cast for the movie we’re making, but we also have an eye on the future. So when we were casting Chris Pratt, we needed the best Star-Lord, but at the same time, we said, ‘We need somebody who one day might go toe to toe with Robert Downey Jr.'” This foresight would ultimately come to fruition in Infinity War.
Competitive Casting Process
While Pratt eventually became synonymous with the role of Peter Quill, Marvel also considered several other actors for the part. Eddie Redmayne, Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Lee Pace were all in the running, with Pace ultimately landing the role of villain Ronan the Accuser. Interestingly, Glenn Howerton from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia was reportedly the next contender after Pratt.
