Rene Kirby, renowned for his work in “Shallow Hal,” died on July 11 in Burlington, Vermont. He was 70 years old.

His brother Jon informed Seven Days that Kirby passed away at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Kirby had been hospitalized for two months, battling kidney, bladder, and esophagus issues along with multiple infections. Although he had previously conquered throat cancer, he lost his ability to speak after having his larynx removed.

Life and Early Achievements

Born in Vermont, Rene Kirby faced the challenges of spina bifida, a condition that results in scoliosis, leg paralysis, and walking difficulties. Despite these challenges, he excelled in athletics, achieving state titles in swimming and skiing. Kirby spent 20 years working with IBM before a chance encounter with director Peter Farelly altered his career path.

A Serendipitous Encounter

While living in Vermont, Kirby was discovered by Peter Farelly during the filming of “Me, Myself and Irene” in 1999. Impressed by Kirby’s personality, Farelly cast him in “Shallow Hal,” where he played the memorable character Walt alongside stars like Gwyneth Paltrow and Jack Black. Kirby’s unique presence in the film industry was further highlighted when Farelly remarked in a 2023 Burlington Free Press interview, “Rene’s a guy we met in real life, on our travels, in Burlington. You see him in Burlington, but you don’t see him in the movies. There’s a disconnect there.”

Career Highlights

Following “Shallow Hal,” Kirby reunited with the Farrelly brothers in the 2003 film “Stuck on You,” playing the role of Phil Rupp. His career also included a small part in the 2005 series “Carnivàle,” which depicted the lives of characters in a traveling circus during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression.
