Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step in bolstering its entertainment industry with the launch of PlayMaker Studios, a cutting-edge film studio near Riyadh. The studio’s inaugural project is an epic historical film, “Unbroken Sword,” directed by renowned filmmaker Alik Sakharov. Known for his work on acclaimed series such as “The Sopranos” and “Game of Thrones,” Sakharov brings considerable expertise to this ambitious venture. As PlayMaker Studios sets the stage for high-caliber productions, it positions Saudi Arabia as a burgeoning hub for global filmmaking.

The Launch of PlayMaker Studios

Located within Qiddiya Entertainment City, just outside Riyadh, PlayMaker Studios is an integral part of Saudi Arabia’s push to diversify its economy and culture. Spread over 50 acres, the state-of-the-art facilities feature multiple soundstages equipped with high-end audio systems. These cutting-edge resources promise to accommodate ambitious productions from around the world, aiming to draw filmmakers to the Middle East.

Beyond its impressive soundstages, PlayMaker Studios offers production offices and a range of on-site amenities for seamless filming operations. The complex includes full production services, including dedicated post-production and visual effects areas, as well as music studios. Moreover, international producers can benefit from Saudi Arabia’s 40% production rebate, designed to attract global talent and projects.

“Unbroken Sword”: A Grand Initiative

Scheduled to start principal photography in early 2026, “Unbroken Sword” marks the inaugural project for PlayMaker Studios. Set in 7th-century Arabia, the film narrates the tale of a legendary warrior leading a Muslim army through uncharted deserts, confronting the formidable Roman and Persian empires. Backed by the General Entertainment Authority and Riyadh Season, and produced by Sela, this epic promises to be a landmark in Saudi cinema.

A Visionary Endeavor

The introduction of PlayMaker Studios is part of the broader Qiddiya project, a crucial aspect of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy. Funded by the Public Investment Fund, Qiddiya aims to create jobs and reduce the nation’s economic dependence on oil. Richard Sharkey, a seasoned producer with credits including “House of the Dragon” and “The Lord of the Rings” franchises, is executive producing “Unbroken Sword.” He remarked on the groundbreaking nature of the project, emphasizing its significance in the global film industry.

Abdullah Aldawood, managing director of Qiddiya Investment Company, highlighted the studio’s role as a cornerstone of Qiddiya City’s entertainment ecosystem. He expressed enthusiasm for how PlayMaker Studios and “Unbroken Sword” contribute to the country’s burgeoning success in the creative industries, aspiring to make Saudi Arabia a world-class destination for innovation, culture, and entertainment.
