Russell Brand Declares in Court: No One Dares Touch Him

In a significant turn of events at London’s Southwark Crown Court, Russell Brand took to the stand for the first time in his ongoing trial for rape and sexual assault. The 48-year-old comedian and actor revealed that he has been unable to secure any witnesses to testify on his behalf, stating, “I have not.” His statement raises questions about the strength of his defense as the trial progresses.

Charges Against Brand

The prosecution has completed its case, outlining serious allegations against Brand. He faces three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one charge of attempted indecent assault, with six women coming forward with claims of offenses dating from 1999 to 2009. Notably, a charge of indecent assault was recently downgraded to an attempted indecent assault by Justice Bennathan.

Allegations from Complainants

Among the allegations is one woman’s claim that Brand raped her in a hotel room in Bournemouth in 1999 after one of his comedy gigs. Another woman alleges that in 2004, he groped her and subsequently raped her in a bar toilet in Soho. A separate complainant asserts that Brand anally raped her at his home in Hampstead in 2009, following consensual sexual activity. Throughout the proceedings, Brand has consistently denied any criminal wrongdoing.

Brand’s Testimony and Defense

As Brand took the stand, he described a “sea of change” in his life following his marriage to pop superstar Katy Perry in 2010, which he attributed to a surge in fame. When questioned about the documentary that led to the police investigation of him in 2023, Brand expressed that it was “devastating.”

During his testimony, his barrister, Ian Winter, probed him about whether anyone with relevant evidence would support him. Brand’s stark response was, “No,” indicating a lack of support from potential witnesses. Additionally, he lamented how “my entire life has been consumed by these allegations,” underscoring the personal toll the accusations have taken on him.

Consent and Allegations

During questioning, Brand recalls various statements from the complainants, admitting he remembers some encounters while others are vague. He responded affirmatively to a question about whether he engages in conversation during sexual encounters, stating, “Yes… I believe I would have been saying: ‘Am I doing this right, do you like this, is this OK?” When asked for his perspective on consent, he emphasized, “Consent is a fundamental, essential and necessary, and in many ways more important than sex itself.”

Addressing specific allegations, including one where a complainant accused him of forcing her to perform oral sex, Brand firmly denied any wrongdoing. “Absolutely not,” he said when asked if he had groped her breasts, describing such acts as “disgusting behavior.” He maintained that their brief interaction was consensual, insisting there was “absolutely no question” regarding her consent to enter the bathroom with him.
