Ranveer Singh's 'Dhurandhar' Shatters Indian Box Office Records 2025

India‘s cinematic landscape witnessed an unprecedented flourish in 2025, propelled by the phenomenal success of films like Ranveer Singh’s ‘Dhurandhar.’ With record-breaking performances, the Indian box office soared to an all-time high of $1.48 billion, emphasizing the industry’s remarkable growth. This milestone not only marks the first time the market has surpassed INR13,000 crore but also highlights a reinvigoration of Hindi cinema, elevating India’s status in the global film arena.

Cinematic Triumphs and Milestones

In 2025, India’s box office collections reached an unprecedented INR13,395 crore ($1.48 billion), setting a new milestone. This achievement, chronicled in Ormax Media’s annual report, showcases local Indian box office figures, excluding international collections. A key highlight was Aditya Dhar’s ‘Dhurandhar,’ starring Ranveer Singh, grossing $105.1 million and becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time, surpassing the previous record held by ‘Stree 2’ in 2024 with $77.2 million.

The Indian theatrical market reflected growth with a 13% increase from the previous year’s $130.94 billion, overshadowing the 2023 record of $135.29 billion. With 37 films crossing the INR100 crore mark, up from 22 in 2024, the industry showcased robust performance.

Revitalization of Hindi Cinema

The resurgence in Hindi cinema significantly contributed to this thriving market. Collections reached $609 million, marking an 18% rise from 2024. Original Hindi productions led the charge, accounting for 93% of the segment’s collections, while the reliance on dubbed South Indian films dropped dramatically to 7%. This push from original content sparked a 59% annual growth.

Among the standout titles, three films exceeded the INR500 crore benchmark: ‘Dhurandhar,’ ‘Kantara A Legend: Chapter-1’ ($80.1 million), and ‘Chhaava‘ ($76.6 million). Notably, ‘Saiyaara,’ ‘Coolie,’ and ‘Mahavatar Narsimha’ each surpassed INR300 crore collections, further bolstering the industry’s success.

International and Regional Dynamics

International releases also experienced significant growth, achieving a 49% increase to $155.2 million. ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ led the international segment with $26.4 million, marking the second-highest performance since 2019. However, the market’s advancement was primarily driven by rising ticket prices rather than footfall, with the average ticket price jumping 20% from INR134 to INR161.

Regionally, Gujarati cinema saw explosive growth of 189%, led by the film ‘Laalo: Krishna Sada Sahaayate,’ which grossed $12.6 million. Kannada cinema rebounded with a 73% increase to $58.4 million, reinforced by ‘Kantara A Legend: Chapter-1’ in its original language. Meanwhile, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam cinema depicted steady to mixed outcomes, while Punjabi and Marathi films faced significant downturns.

A Diverse Box Office Landscape

Elsewhere, re-releases contributed modestly, with ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ leading the segment. Assamese cinema experienced growth fueled by ‘Roi Roi Binale,’ which drove a 131% increase in the ‘Others’ category. These dynamic shifts across various languages underscore India’s diverse cinematic landscape.

In 2025, a melding of blockbuster releases and strategic market expansions showcased the potency of India’s film industry, achieving unprecedented milestones with films like ‘Dhurandhar’ leading the charge, galvanizing the box office to new heights.
