Princess Diana’s Heartwarming Meal for William and Harry

Princess Diana Only Served This Food When William & Harry Were Home

Princess Diana’s culinary habits were marked by a focus on nutritious eating, yet she notably relaxed her standards when it came to feeding her sons, Princes William and Harry. The revelation comes from her former chef, Darren McGrady, who explains that the food she served was specially tailored to create a sense of home for her boys. This special dish served only when William and Harry were around has captured public interest as it highlights the tender maternal side of the iconic royal.

A Taste of Normalcy in Royal Life

Darren McGrady, who initially cooked for Queen Elizabeth II for over a decade before becoming Diana’s chef at Kensington Palace in 1993, has shared insights about the unique dining experience she created when her sons were present. According to McGrady, Princess Diana’s regular diet consisted of clean and light meals, with a strong emphasis on health. He noted, “She never ate pork. Occasionally, she’d have lamb when she was entertaining guests, but for the most part it was chicken, fish, or vegetarian options.”

Yet, when William and Harry returned home from school, the culinary rules shifted. McGrady emphasized, “She was into healthy eating, so we never had beef on the menu unless the boys were home.” This meant that a hearty beef dish made its occasional appearance solely in honor of the royal siblings.

Transformations in the Kitchen

Relocating from Buckingham Palace to Kensington Palace required McGrady to adapt his cooking style significantly. He explained, “When I was cooking for her [Diana], I had to change my style of cooking. I had to move from cooking food for the Queen — heavy sauces, rich sauces and creams — to start cooking lighter food again, cutting out the fats, cutting out the carbs.” This commitment to health didn’t mean the absence of indulgence when it came to her boys.

Diana had a clear philosophy about nutrition and exercise. “She would say, ‘You take care of all the fats, and I’ll take care of all the carbs at the gym,’” McGrady recounted. The chef often made dishes in a healthier fat-free format, particularly items like tomato mousse, which Diana favored.

Comfort Food and Special Treats

When Princes William and Harry were at home, McGrady revealed that the kitchen embraced a more child-friendly menu. “It changed from Princess Diana’s healthy eating—stuffed peppers, eggplant, vegetarian dishes—to nursery food,” he remarked. According to him, the boys enjoyed cottage pie, pizza, chicken nuggets, French fries, potato wedges, and macaroni cheese, reflecting a typical family’s comfort food choices.

In a surprising twist, McGrady recounted one memorable afternoon when Diana made an unconventional choice for lunch. “The princess came in and said, ‘Cancel lunch today. I’m taking them out,’” he recalled. When he inquired about the destination, she simply stated, “McDonald’s.” Although McGrady protested, insisting he could prepare better burgers, Diana remained steadfast: “I know that, Darren, but they want the toys and the Happy Meal.” This candid admission highlights how even a royal mom appreciated the joy of indulging her children.

Princess Diana’s willingness to incorporate beloved snacks and spontaneous fast food outings showcases her nurturing side, as she created a warm and inviting atmosphere for her sons. The inclusion of favorite comfort foods, coupled with the occasional beef dinner when Princes William and Harry were home, reveals a tender balance between discipline and delight in the royal kitchen.
