Paul Dano Thanks Fans for Support After Tarantino Criticism

In a surprising twist, actor Paul Dano has addressed Quentin Tarantino‘s critique of his performance in “There Will Be Blood.” Despite the harsh words from the renowned director, the incident sparked widespread support for Dano, highlighting his esteemed position in the acting community. As the controversy unfolded, Dano chose to remain silent, allowing the supportive voices of fans and colleagues to resonate. This article explores the ongoing discussion sparked by Tarantino’s comments and the collective defense for Dano.

Paul Dano’s Response to Tarantino’s Criticism

During an event celebrating the 20th anniversary of “Little Miss Sunshine” at the Sundance Film Festival, Paul Dano was asked about Quentin Tarantino’s scathing dismissal of his work. Dano, known for his reserved demeanor, let the public’s outcry speak volumes. “That was really nice,” he shared with Variety. “I was also incredibly grateful that the world spoke up for me so I didn’t have to.” His co-star, Toni Collette, was more direct, defending Dano passionately by saying, “Are we really going there? Fuck that guy! He must’ve been high… it was just confusing. Who does that?”

Industry Support for Dano’s Talent

Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, directors of “Little Miss Sunshine,” also expressed their disapproval of Quentin Tarantino’s remarks. Dayton called the comments “an embarrassment,” suggesting that Dano’s raw performance might have been unsettling for Tarantino. “I can only think that his rawness made Tarantino uncomfortable,” said Dayton. Faris added, “The support for Paul was immediate… he is loved by so many. He is so smart.”

Tarantino’s Controversial Podcast Remarks

The controversy began when Quentin Tarantino criticized Dano during a discussion on Brett Easton Ellis’ podcast, where he ranked the best movies of the 21st century. Though he acknowledged “There Will Be Blood” as a top contender, Tarantino claimed Dano’s performance pushed it down his list. “Obviously, it’s supposed to be a two-hander,” Tarantino said, referencing Dano and co-star Daniel Day-Lewis. “[Dano] is weak sauce, man. He is the weak sister. [Daniel] is eating him [alive].” Tarantino further suggested that Austin Butler would have been a better choice for the role.

Reactions from the Acting Community

Tarantino’s comments sparked a broader backlash, with many in the industry voicing their support for Dano. George Clooney weighed in, stating he “would be honored to work with” Dano following the remarks. Matthew Lillard, another actor mentioned disparagingly by Tarantino, expressed his dismay at such public criticism, remarking at GalaxyCon that it “hurts your feelings.”

As “Little Miss Sunshine” celebrates its 20th anniversary with a special screening, the event underscores the lasting impact of indie films and the resilience of actors like Paul Dano. The outpouring of support he received serves as a testament to his talent and the high regard in which he is held by peers and audiences alike.
