New Classics Sales Label Debuts with Ryan Gosling’s ‘Half Nelson’ at Sundance

Charades, a dynamic sales company based in Paris, has teamed up with former Studiocanal executive Maxime Vauthier to launch the ‘Déjà Vu Cinema Club.’ This new venture aims to breathe fresh life into classic films, both in theaters and digital platforms. As a highlight of their launch, they are featuring a restored screening of “Half Nelson” starring Ryan Gosling at Sundance, marking the film’s 20th anniversary.

Revitalizing Classic Films

The Déjà Vu Cinema Club is all about giving classic films a new lease on life. By combining physical and digital releases, the initiative aims to reconnect audiences with heritage cinema. The curated sales label will focus on international representation of these classics, showcasing their timeless appeal to contemporary viewers.

The label debuts at the Park City Legacy program with “Half Nelson,” a film that resonates with audiences even after two decades. Starring Ryan Gosling, Shareeka Epps, and Anthony Mackie, this screening coincides with the film’s 20th anniversary, underscoring its lasting impact.

A Selective Approach

‘Déjà Vu’ plans to focus on 10 to 15 films, selected for their potential to engage modern audiences through innovative marketing, 4K restorations, and festival appearances. Maxime Vauthier expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting a commitment to bold, author-driven cinema.

“Half Nelson” is considered the perfect launch title due to its aesthetic and cultural significance, according to Vauthier. The film’s narrative and themes continue to resonate, making it an ideal choice for introducing the new label to international circuits.

A Community-Driven Project

Charades and Vauthier are eager to collaborate with distributors and filmmakers to bring these classic films back to the forefront. Charades emphasized the importance of treating these beloved films with the same care as new features, aiming to engage younger audiences.

The re-launch of “Half Nelson” is seen as a fitting tribute to its premier at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, where it secured its place in American independent film history. Produced by Jamie Patricof and his partners, the film marked a pivotal moment for the careers of Gosling, Fleck, and Boden.

Enduring Themes and Commitment

In “Half Nelson,” Gosling plays Dan, a teacher with a hidden struggle, who forms an unexpected bond with a student, Drey, played by Shareeka Epps. The film was crafted by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, with music by Broken Social Scene, capturing its distinct, enduring appeal.

This initiative not only seeks to celebrate past successes but also to ensure these stories command the stage once more, engaging a new generation of moviegoers and maintaining their relevance in today’s cinematic landscape.
