Neon, a renowned distributor known for championing innovative cinema, has secured the worldwide rights to the highly anticipated film “Clarissa,” starring Sophie Okonedo, David Oyelowo, and Ayo Edebiri. Directed by the talented sibling duo Arie and Chuko Esiri, this film is poised to captivate audiences with its unique narrative and artistic vision. The acquisition marks another significant step in Neon’s commitment to bringing compelling international stories to a global audience.
The Vision Behind “Clarissa”
Set against the vibrant backdrop of Lagos and the serene landscapes of Delta State, Nigeria, “Clarissa” offers a modern take on Virginia Woolf’s classic novel “Mrs. Dalloway.” The film features Sophie Okonedo as Clarissa, a society woman navigating the complexities of a reunion with old friends, sparking reflections on past relationships and untapped dreams. The storyline unfolds over the course of one evening, weaving themes of love, desire, and introspection.
A Star-Studded Ensemble
Alongside Sophie Okonedo, “Clarissa” boasts an impressive cast, including David Oyelowo, known for his powerful performance in “Selma,” and Ayo Edebiri from “The Bear.” Newcomer India Amarteifio and Toheeb Jimoh, celebrated for his roles in “Ted Lasso” and “Industry,” further enrich the ensemble, promising a dynamic and engaging cinematic experience.
Behind the Lens
The screenplay, penned by Chuko Esiri, is directed and produced by both Esiri brothers, along with producers Theresa Park and Nicholas Weinstock. The project also features co-producers Nina Gold and Thomas Bassett, with executive production by Sophie Okonedo and industry veterans Dolly Omodolapo Kola-Balogun, Osahon Okunbo, and Jason Reif. Previous works by the Esiri siblings, such as “Eyimofe (This Is My Desire),” have garnered critical acclaim, winning five African Movie Academy Awards.
Neon’s Global Strategy
Neon plans to release “Clarissa” theatrically in the United States, with Neon International handling foreign sales. This acquisition is part of Neon’s broader strategy to expand its slate of diverse and culturally rich films. Other upcoming releases include Oliver Laxe’s “Sirat,” Matt Johnson’s “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie,” and Baz Luhrmann’s “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert.”
The deal for “Clarissa” was orchestrated by Neon’s director of acquisitions, Kate Gondwe, alongside the UTA Independent Film Group, affirming the company’s ability to secure high-quality content from innovative filmmakers around the world.
