Mick Jagger Celebrates Sam Fender’s Tribute to The Rolling Stones

Mick Jagger recently expressed his approval of Sam Fender’s cover of the Rolling Stones classic “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” In a statement, Jagger shared, “I’m a fan of Sam’s work, so I was pleased to hear he was covering one of my songs. I think he’s done a great job with it.” The cover, produced for a U.K. retailer’s Christmas advertisement, captures the essence of the original while offering a fresh take.

Fender’s Nostalgic Rendition

Although Fender’s version is roughly half the length of the original, it resonates with the same heartfelt sentiment. Featuring a rich horn section and a full choir, his rendition conveys a mix of disappointment and acceptance—the emotions that come from navigating the age-old struggle between wants and needs.

A Collaborative Effort

Fender, along with bandmates Joe Atkinson and Dean Thompson, recorded the cover in Tyneside, England. Drawing on his personal history, he enlisted musicians from groups that hold a special place in his heart. “It was a privilege to rework such an iconic song by such a legendary band,” Fender remarked. He also involved the children’s choir from his former school, John Spence Community High School, and arranged for a brass section with the Easington Colliery Band, enhancing the emotional depth of the recording.

Recent Success and Future Plans

Last year, Fender released his album People Watching, which won the Mercury Prize and garnered multiple accolades, including BRIT Awards and an Ivor Novello Award for his songwriting skills. Looking ahead, he has announced plans for the Proper Massive Stadium Tour, set for 2027, with dates confirmed in Europe.
