Michele Mulroney: New WGA West Leader Defends Writers' Rights

Michele Mulroney has been elected president of the Writers Guild of America West (WGA West), emphasizing her commitment to safeguard the writers’ health plan and challenge the escalating issue of “free work.” Her leadership marks a pivotal moment as the guild prepares for critical industry negotiations.

New Leadership at WGA West

With her election as president, Michele Mulroney takes the helm of the WGA West at a crucial time. Formerly the vice president, Mulroney stepped into the top role without opposition, succeeding Meredith Stiehm who completed her term. Joining her in leadership are Travis Donnelly as vice president and Peter Murrieta as secretary-treasurer.

The newly elected board members include Molly Nussbaum, Mike Royce, Maggie Levin, Rob Forman, Adam Conover, Matt Ross, Myles Warden, and Marguerite MacIntyre. Additionally, Cathryn Humphris will serve a special one-year term, filling the vacancy left by Donnelly.

Focus on Health Plan and Industry Negotiations

The WGA’s upcoming negotiations with major studios, set for next year, place the writers’ health plan at the forefront. Not a significant focus since 2017, Mulroney stressed its importance due to rising healthcare costs and fewer contributions resulting from industry changes. “We’ll need to make smart moves in order to continue to provide the high level of care and benefits our members have fought so hard to secure,” she stated.

Addressing the ‘Free Work’ Challenge

Mulroney also highlighted her ongoing battle against “free work,” which requires writers to provide multiple drafts before an official submission. Progress was made in 2023 with the introduction of a paid “second step” for writers below a certain income threshold. However, she warned that this issue now affects television writers and calls for continued action.

Industry Support and Participation

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers extended congratulations to Mulroney, expressing a willingness to collaborate on key issues. “We look forward to working closely with President Mulroney to address key issues for WGA writers and to strengthen our industry with fair, balanced solutions,” said a spokesperson.

With 2,567 ballots cast, the engagement reflects a committed membership ready to support Mulroney’s vision for the WGA West. Her leadership is anticipated to bring fresh strategies to both protect and empower writers in the changing landscape of the entertainment industry.
