Matthew McConaughey recently shared an intriguing anecdote from his past during an appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. He revealed how his role alongside Jennifer Lopez in the 2001 romantic comedy “The Wedding Planner” surprisingly helped him navigate a potentially tricky situation at the U.S.-Mexico border.
A Brush with the Law
Recalling the incident, McConaughey stated, “I pull in one late night crossing the border going way down south. I get pulled over, and it’s one of those pull overs. They noticed me and I’m the gringo in the truck. I’m like, ‘Oh jeez. Get the wallet out. Here we go.’ It was going down.” To lighten the environment, he mentioned his co-star, saying, “Do you guys know Jennifer Lopez? Ever see ‘The Wedding Planner’? Yeah, that was me.” The officers recognized him, leading to a surprising turn of events: “They all went off… we ended up taking pictures together and they let me go.”
The Impact of ‘The Wedding Planner’
Released in 2001, “The Wedding Planner” marked a significant turning point in McConaughey’s career, grossing an impressive $94 million worldwide. This film established him as a leading figure in the romantic comedy genre throughout the 2000s. He achieved further acclaim with subsequent hits like “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “Failure To Launch,” “Fool’s Gold,” and “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” all reaching or surpassing the $100 million benchmark.
On the podcast, McConaughey reflected fondly on “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” stating, “I think it’s, probably, my favorite rom-com I’ve done and a lot of people love that rom-com. And it still pays the best mailbox money of any film I’ve ever done. By far. By lengths.” He noted that his earnings from the film were particularly lucrative around Valentine’s Day. “When it used to be just DVDs or cable, every March I’d get a big check because Valentine’s Day,” he shared.
A Shift in Career Direction
In a separate discussion on the “Good Trouble” podcast, McConaughey divulged that he took a break from Hollywood after feeling pigeonholed in the rom-com category. Despite enjoying the genre and its financial rewards, he craved diversity in his roles. “When I was rolling with the rom-coms, and I was the ‘rom-com dude,’ that was my lane and I liked that lane,” he explained. “Hollywood said, ’No, no, no. You should stay there.’ So, since I couldn’t do what I wanted to do, I stopped doing what I was doing, and I moved down to the ranch in Texas.”
During this time, he faced the daunting decision of stepping back from a successful career, including an instance where he turned down a $14.5 million offer for another rom-com. Despite the risks, his bold move eventually paid off, leading to significant roles in films like “Mud,” “Dallas Buyers Club,” and series like “True Detective.” Ultimately, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in “Dallas Buyers Club.”
