Matthew Loeb Secures IATSE Leadership Again

In a significant development for the entertainment industry, Matthew Loeb has been reelected as International President of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). This decision underscores Loeb’s ongoing influence and leadership within the organization, which plays a crucial role in advocating for industries related to film, theater, and television. His reelection reflects a consensus among members eager to continue enhancing workplace environments and addressing emerging challenges like technological advancements and diversity issues.

Continued Leadership and Reelection Highlights

Matthew Loeb was reelected “by acclimation” during the 70th Quadrennial Convention held in Honolulu. This decision was made alongside the reelection of other key figures, including General Secretary-Treasurer James B. Wood, 13 international vice presidents, three trustees, and a delegate to the Canadian Labour Congress. The event marked a pivotal moment for IATSE as it involved critical discussions on union strategies and goals.

The reelection of these leaders reinforces IATSE’s dedication to tackling vital issues within the entertainment industry, ensuring strong representation and advocacy for its members across North America.

Convention Focus and Resolutions

The IATSE Convention, attended by numerous delegates, addressed pressing topics such as U.S.-Canada relations and policies favorable to workers at various levels. The emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion was pivotal, alongside support measures for members facing immigration challenges amid military-style raids. Resolutions passed during the convention are a testament to the guild’s commitment to advancing worker rights.

Some key resolutions included advocating for federal film and television incentives, supporting Canadian members amidst trade conflicts, and addressing the implications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in entertainment. Resolutions also focused on opposing discrimination, advocating for pro-union legislation like the PRO Act, and backing the unionization of production accountants.

Innovations and Future Directions

Notably, the convention also led to constitutional updates that reflect modern inclusivity. A new membership designation was introduced for Visual Effects (VFX) workers, marking a milestone as these workers, recently granted contracts at major studios, were represented for the first time at an IATSE Convention.

Matthew Loeb’s first election in 2008 saw substantial growth and improvement in workplace protections. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing the interests of entertainment workers, ensuring the organization remains a robust advocate.

“I am honored and humbled to continue the work we do together,” said Loeb following his reelection. “Let’s seize this momentum, lock arms and get ready for the fights of the future.” His words resonate with the union’s continuous mission to support its vast network comprising over 170,000 technicians, artisans, and craftspersons.
