Maryam Touzani's 'Calle Málaga' Redefines Aging and Sexuality

Moroccan director Maryam Touzani has once again captured the cinematic spotlight with her latest film, “Calle Málaga,” which artfully challenges the societal views on aging and sexuality. Premiering in prestigious venues such as Venice and Toronto, this film delves deeply into personal territory, exploring the life of María Ángeles, portrayed by Spanish icon Carmen Maura. Touzani uses this poignant narrative to explore complex themes, drawing inspiration from her own family history and the unique cultural tapestry of Tangier.

The Deep Roots of “Calle Málaga”

Maryam Touzani, acclaimed for films like “Adam” and “The Blue Caftan,” brings her intimate storytelling approach to “Calle Málaga,” set against the vibrant backdrop of Tangier. The film’s narrative mirrors her family’s Spanish roots in the city, especially reflecting the life of her maternal grandmother. This familial connection enriches the film, offering a nuanced perspective on identity—melding Spanish and Moroccan influences.

Touzani’s personal journey through loss also informs the film. After the passing of her mother in 2023, she found solace in the Spanish language and culinary traditions that permeate the movie. “Hearing Spanish and smelling familiar dishes became a way of healing my wounds,” Touzani reveals, underscoring the deeply personal nature of this project.

Exploring Aging and Identity

In “Calle Málaga,” Touzani skillfully engages with the tensions surrounding aging, as many elderly residents of Tangier grapple with pressure to return to Spain. María Ángeles’ struggle with her daughter’s decision to sell their family home reflects a broader narrative about belonging and identity. This theme resonates deeply with audiences, challenging preconceived notions about aging.

Despite not initially envisioning Carmen Maura for the role, her connection with the character was immediate. Maura’s spirited portrayal brought a unique vitality to María Ángeles, reflecting shared attributes of passion and resilience. Maura even immersed herself in Tangier life, choosing to live near her character’s home to authentically embody her role.

Aging with Dignity and Exploring Sexuality

“Calle Málaga” bravely delves into intimate aspects of María Ángeles’ life, including rediscovering her sexuality. These scenes, handled with sensitivity and trust, reflect Touzani’s aim to portray aging with dignity and autonomy. She comments, “Through María Ángeles, I wanted to challenge society’s view on aging and the expectations that come with it.”

The film juxtaposes public modesty with María Ángeles’ personal storytelling to her childhood friend Joséfa, enhancing the narrative’s richness. Touzani believes imagination enhances the audience experience, offering depth beyond what visuals alone can convey.

A New Chapter in Moroccan Cinema

Touzani’s previous success with “The Blue Caftan” set a high bar for Moroccan cinema, and “Calle Málaga” promises to reach even greater heights. By venturing boldly into discussions about aging and sexuality, the film not only enriches the cultural dialogue but also stands as a testament to Touzani’s visionary storytelling.
