Mark Ruffalo, the acclaimed actor known for his role as the Hulk in the Marvel films, is facing significant backlash from prominent Jewish advocacy groups. The Simon Wiesenthal Center and Creative Community for Peace have criticized him for allegedly perpetuating “antisemitic tropes” in his recent social media commentary.
Backlash from Advocacy Groups
Jim Berk, CEO of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Words matter, and so does the willingness to draw a line when legitimate debate gives way to antisemitic tropes.” He praised Paramount for speaking out against Ruffalo’s rhetoric, noting that such moral clarity is essential in an era where antisemitism is often minimized or rationalized.
Ari Engel, executive director of Creative Community for Peace, echoed these sentiments, remarking that Ruffalo’s comments have increasingly crossed the line from criticism of Israel into what he termed “extremist and antisemitic messaging.”
Paramount’s Condemnation
The controversy intensified when Paramount issued a rare statement condemning Ruffalo’s remarks. The company’s spokesperson expressed concern, stating they are “troubled when antisemitic tropes are invoked in purported service of a business dispute.” This response was triggered by Ruffalo’s Instagram post that re-shared an older video of Jewish Paramount Skydance board member Safra Catz, which he claimed depicted her “revelling” in a “genocide” connected to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Catz, previously the CEO of Oracle and known for her ties to Larry Ellison, father of David Ellison—CEO of Paramount Skydance—has found herself at the center of this exchange. Ruffalo has been a vocal opponent of the ongoing acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount, which involves significant financial commitments from Larry Ellison and several Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds.
Ruffalo’s Response and Broader Implications
In his latest comments, Ruffalo claimed that Larry Ellison’s backing of the acquisition would allow him to wield considerable power within the newly formed entity. He objected to the allegations of antisemitism directed at him, describing them as “appalling and fundamentally dishonest.”
However, both the Simon Wiesenthal Center and Creative Community for Peace firmly stand by Paramount’s assessment. Berk concluded, “Invoking Israel in an issue where it is completely irrelevant is a textbook case of obsession and demonization. Paramount was right to call it out.” Engel added that regardless of Ruffalo’s intentions, his words contribute to the normalization of “violent anti-Jewish hatred” that is resurging globally.
