Mark Ruffalo, known for his role as an FBI agent in the heist thriller “Now You See Me,” recently shared an anecdote about a dramatic incident involving co-star Woody Harrelson during the film’s production. The actors were in New Orleans, a city vibrant with energy, when what could have been an innocent evening out turned into a potential bar brawl. In a revealing discussion on the “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast, Ruffalo described how he intervened just in time to prevent a situation that could have gone disastrously wrong.
A Wild Setting
While filming “Now You See Me” in New Orleans, Ruffalo and Harrelson were immersed in the heart of the city, capturing scenes amidst the hustle of the streets. “We were shooting ‘Now You See Me’ in New Orleans, completely on the streets. Totally wild,” Ruffalo explained in his podcast appearance. The bustling environment often seamlessly intertwined with their working hours, sometimes even pulling them into the vibrant nightlife of Mardi Gras.
The Unexpected Incident
After wrapping up a day of shooting, Ruffalo and Harrelson, alongside Ted Danson, ventured out to a lively bar. As the night unfolded, Harrelson was approached by a fan. Ruffalo recounted, “A woman came up to [Woody] and she said, ‘Oh my God, I love you so much.’” Harrelson’s friendly response was abruptly interrupted by another man who aggressively pushed the fan aside and shoved Harrelson. Ruffalo humorously noted, “Woody’s first response is not ‘shove someone back,’ but ‘immediately punch them in the face,’” acknowledging the volatile turn the situation could take.
A Timely Intervention
The potential chaos escalated quickly, with Ruffalo caught in the rising tension. “It was getting to become a whole thing,” he explained. Understanding the precariousness of the situation, Ruffalo acted swiftly. “I grabbed [Woody] and I pulled him out,” he said, highlighting his concern that the altercation could escalate beyond control. His quick thinking not only diffused the immediate conflict but potentially shielded their group from a nasty outcome.
The Legacy of “Now You See Me”
“Now You See Me” was more than just a film; it sparked a successful franchise, leading to a sequel and an eagerly anticipated third installment. Ruffalo and Harrelson, along with a star-studded cast including Jesse Eisenberg, Mélanie Laurent, and Morgan Freeman, delivered a film that grossed $351 million worldwide. Despite the bar incident, their time in New Orleans contributed to the film’s unique energy and memorable scenes.
