Machine Gun Kelly recently shared insights about a missed opportunity in the film industry, revealing he declined an audition for Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” due to the inclusion of a racial slur. The musician and actor chose to stand by his principles, sparking discussions about ethics in casting decisions.
Refusing to Cross Personal Boundaries
During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Machine Gun Kelly explained his decision to pass on auditioning for a vampire role in “Sinners.” He stated, “I was supposed to be in that. The vampire, they had me set up to do the audition — it’s the one that’s in the house, so he’s the second vampire, the one that the guy comes and eats the family. In the audition, he has to say the ‘n-word’ and I wouldn’t do it.” His refusal to use the racial slur highlights his commitment to maintaining personal boundaries, even if it means walking away from potential roles.
Aspirations and Universal Timing
Despite this decision, Machine Gun Kelly expressed his desire to continue pursuing a career in acting. “I have a lot of aspirations to be in movies, it just hasn’t panned out that way,” he said. Emphasizing his belief in “universal timing,” he added, “It’ll align. The angels will put something in the works.” This outlook underscores his determination to succeed in film without compromising his values.
Support from Peers
On the show, co-host Darius Butler showed support for the artist’s choice by giving him a fist-bump, acknowledging his stand against using offensive language. Machine Gun Kelly was referring specifically to “the second vampire” role, which is likely associated with a character depicted as a KKK member. Ultimately, Peter Dreimanis played that part in the movie featuring stars like Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, and Miles Caton.
Looking to the Future
The conversation also touched on Machine Gun Kelly’s broader ambitions. “I’d like to be in cinema while I still look young,” he mentioned. As he continues to navigate his dual career, fans anticipate the release of his upcoming album “Americana” on August 8, eager to see what new opportunities await.
