M-Appeal Secures Rights to “On the Road”

M-Appeal, a renowned Berlin-based sales company, has secured the international rights to David Pablos’ “On the Road” (“En El Camino”). This bold Mexican film will debut in the Horizons section of the Venice Film Festival, highlighting its potential for critical acclaim. The movie presents a unique journey, both physical and emotional, through the world of trucking in Mexico.

A Journey of Discovery and Danger

“On the Road” tells the story of Veneno, a rebellious drifter who finds himself navigating life along Mexico’s highways. He persuades Muñeco, a private and rugged driver, to give him a ride. As they travel together, they form an unexpected bond that challenges the hyper-masculine environment they inhabit. The lead roles are portrayed by newcomer Victor Miguel Prieto and Osvaldo Sánchez, known for his role in “Pedro Páramo.”

David Pablos’ Cinematic Vision

Director David Pablos, celebrated for his works like “Dance of the 41” and “The Chosen Ones,” brings his unique perspective to “On the Road.” His previous films have been recognized at prestigious events such as Cannes and San Sebastián. Pablos is known for exploring themes of identity and emotion, and this film is no different, delving into the complexity of machismo and emotional expression.

A Tribute to Unsung Heroes

Producer Inna Payán emphasizes that “On the Road” pays homage to truck drivers, often an overlooked segment of society. “The film pays tribute to those workers we often see only as obstacles on the road,” she explains. It’s a testament to the hidden stories and emotions of those who navigate the challenging trucking landscape daily.

The film, produced by Animal de Luz and co-produced by La Corriente del Golfo, among others, has received support through the Mexican tax incentive Eficine. Maren Kroymann, managing director of M-Appeal, expressed enthusiasm for this “untypical love story” and praised its “tenderness, stunning cinematography, and deeply human protagonists.”

With “On the Road,” David Pablos continues to push boundaries, offering viewers a film that is as visually striking as it is emotionally profound, making it a must-watch at this year’s Venice Film Festival.
