Lucy Liu on Her 'Rosemead' Role: Testing Emotional Limits

Lucy Liu captivated audiences at the Locarno Film Festival with her compelling portrayal of Irene Chao in the new film “Rosemead.” This gripping drama, which also marks Liu’s debut as a producer, delves into the emotional suffering of her character, asking the poignant question: “How much can you endure?” The film’s exploration of mental health within a Chinese community offers a nuanced look at cultural perspectives and familial responsibilities.

Exploring the Depths of Suffering

In Eric Lin’s “Rosemead,” Liu plays Irene Chao, a single mother grappling with severe health issues while caring for her son, who has schizophrenia. The film, inspired by an L.A. Times article by Frank Shyong, unveils the layers of heartbreak Irene experiences. “The heartbreak is not only what happened but how it happened: knowing that there were other options, but that Irene felt there weren’t any,” Liu reflects.

The narrative dives deep into various cultural views on mental health, highlighting opinions from a Chinese therapist to those advocating for traditional remedies. Liu acknowledges that some in her community may challenge the film’s authenticity. “If my mother saw this movie, she wouldn’t believe it,” she shares. The storyline combines real events and creative interpretation, crafting a narrative that resonates with broader themes of love and endurance.

The Unseen Emotional Struggle

The story intricately portrays Irene’s life, compounded by her husband’s death from brain cancer and her son’s subsequent diagnosis. Simultaneously, Irene battles her cancer, leading to immense physical and emotional strain. “She had become very fragile and aged enormously in that time,” Liu explains.

Renowned for her roles in action films, Liu embodies Irene with a palpable authenticity, shuffling and speaking in accented English. She emphasizes, “Her physical suffering was nothing compared to her emotional suffering. It was important to show her love and will, to be vibrant for her son. The theme is love.”

A Passionate Pursuit of Storytelling

As Liu navigates the challenges of producing, she finds fulfillment in projects that deeply resonate with her. “Producing is hard, but I’d have to really love the project as I love this one,” Liu admits. Her commitment to meaningful storytelling is evident, and she reveals aspirations to engage in more than just commercial ventures.

Liu’s recent reflections on her career underscore a newfound perspective. “I don’t feel like I have to necessarily keep running on the treadmill at the same rate,” she says. The pandemic offered a moment of pause and introspection. “The question is: how much can you endure?” This sentiment mirrors Irene’s struggle and highlights Liu’s own journey toward embracing both vulnerability and strength.
