Karen Bass, the current mayor of Los Angeles, remains unfazed by Spencer Pratt’s unexpected insurgent campaign, despite his appeal to wealthy donors and rising competitiveness. Bass, with her relentless focus on her mayoral achievements, dismisses any suggestion that Pratt’s campaign has led her to self-reflection.
“It’s not prompted any soul-searching from me,” Bass stated firmly to The Hollywood Reporter regarding Pratt’s political endeavor. “I think that we’ll see where his campaign leads him. No.”
Her Concentrated Efforts on Policy
Leading up to the June 2 primary election, Bass emphasizes her successful initiatives, especially in addressing Los Angeles’ production crisis—a pivotal topic in the race. Her administration has taken concrete actions since 2022, such as establishing an industry council, enforcing executive orders to streamline production processes, and supporting Gov. Gavin Newsom’s $750 million state tax credit in 2025.
Future commitments include endorsing the uncapping of California’s film and TV tax credits and advocating for a federal film tax incentive. After securing the endorsement of Hollywood crew unions, Bass expressed her dedication to continued collaboration with these sectors.
Criticism from Rivals
However, her opponents view her efforts as insufficient. Nithya Raman, herself backed by notable Hollywood figures, criticized Bass for delaying the appointment of a film liaison until 2025 amid ongoing job losses. Meanwhile, Spencer Pratt accuses her and Newsom of failing to address more profound economic issues, dismissing their measures as mere “Band-Aids.”
Bass, in conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, defended her track record and highlighted her plans for Hollywood’s future should she secure another term. Her approach involves further cost-cutting measures and reducing bureaucratic hurdles for local film production.
Engagement with Hollywood
Bass’s relationship with Hollywood spans years, and she believes her established connections are pivotal to her success. In her discussion, she mentioned her deep ties within the industry, including feedback from family and industry veterans, guiding her strategic directions.
Despite past achievements in supporting the industry at both state and federal levels, she acknowledges there may still be untapped opportunities to enhance production conditions. Bass remains open to identifying additional red tape that could be eliminated.
Addressing Local Concerns
Responding to concerns about Hollywood Boulevard’s condition, Bass explained collaborative efforts to address homelessness in key areas like the iconic tourist site, aiming for more sustainable solutions rather than temporary fixes.
Regarding campaign dynamics, Bass remains indifferent to facing either Spencer Pratt or Nithya Raman in a possible runoff, expressing a preference to avoid opposition entirely. Bass critiques Pratt’s campaign tone as negative, attributing it to his reality TV background, and dismisses his policy proposals as unrealistic for the city.
The Betrayal Perception
Regarding Nithya Raman’s decision to run against her after previous support, Bass remains unfazed, focusing instead on the consistency of her own leadership and legislative contributions.
As the potential host for the 2028 Olympics, Bass confirmed her cooperation with Casey Wasserman, choosing to prioritize productive collaboration for the event’s success.
In her downtime, Bass enjoys various sitcoms such as “The Neighborhood,” adding a personal touch to her otherwise politically charged schedule.
