The Power of Cinema: Julia Roberts and Sean Penn’s Advocacy

Julia Roberts and Sean Penn took the spotlight as hosts at the Ross House in Mt. Olympus, where they introduced the stirring narrative feature “Manas.” Roberts expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “This movie will change you… It is life-affirming in such a sad, beautiful and magical way.” Penn reflected on meeting Brennand at a Cannes event, saying, “The eloquence and authenticity of this person… could make a great film.” Their advocacy is a testament to the film’s emotional impact and its ability to resonate deeply with audiences.

The Unveiling of “Manas”

Inspired by a decade of research in the Amazon, “Manas” tells the harrowing story of 13-year-old Marcielle, trapped in a cycle of abuse. Following the screening, Brennand and Brazilian actress Dira Paes shared poignant insights about the film’s creation. Brennand emphasized protecting the young lead actress, Jamilli Correa, ensuring she did not directly experience the film’s violence. Paes called for crucial educational resources in remote areas to help break cycles of abuse. Their personal stories highlighted the film’s dedication to authenticity and social impact.

Brennand’s Vision and the Growing Impact of “Manas”

“Manas” has received notable accolades, including the Best Director Award at Venice Days in 2024, and is in the running to represent Brazil at the 2026 Oscars. High-profile filmmakers such as Walter Salles and the Dardenne brothers are backing the film as executive producers. The Brooklyn-based distributor KimStim plans to release “Manas” across the U.S., following its successful 13-week run in Brazil. The film amplifies awareness of systemic abuse, particularly in the Amazon’s remote Marajó Island.

At the event’s close, Brennand shared uplifting news: “Manas” is being screened in the communities where these issues are most prevalent, fulfilling a critical demand for awareness and change. This outreach underscores the powerful role cinema can play in advocacy and education, potentially transforming lives and encouraging global dialogue.
