Judge Advises A$AP Relli to Drop Defamation Case Against Rocky

In a dramatic turn of events, a California judge has urged A$AP Relli to reconsider his defamation claims against A$AP Rocky, advising him to cut his losses before an upcoming decision that could result in significant legal costs. The ongoing legal battle has captured widespread attention, with the judge warning that the case could end unfavorably for Relli, potentially leaving him responsible for A$AP Rocky’s legal fees.

Judge’s Cautionary Advice

At a recent hearing in Los Angeles, Judge Randolph M. Hammock suggested that A$AP Relli, also known as Terell Ephron, might benefit from dropping his defamation lawsuit against A$AP Rocky. “I would urge you to contact the other side and see if a deal can be made,” the judge stated. He further suggested that Relli might consider dismissing the lawsuit to avoid being liable for Rocky’s hefty legal fees. The judge emphasized, “Maybe it’s time to cut your losses.”

The judge conveyed that if Rocky’s motion to dismiss the case on free speech grounds is successful, Relli might be accountable for over $50,000 in fees. Hammock elaborated on the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing the potential financial burden Relli could face.

Legal Challenges and Defamation Claims

Representing himself after his lawyers withdrew post-Rocky’s criminal trial, Relli found himself navigating complex legal waters. Despite investing over $500,000, Relli expressed his determination to fight for his rights. Judge Hammock, however, underscored the challenges of the anti-SLAPP motion, which protects free speech in matters of public interest. He pointed out that Mayers and his lawyer, Joe Tacopina, could pursue fees even if Relli withdrew his case prematurely.

The legal complexities were laid out clearly by Judge Hammock, who advised Relli to reflect on the potential outcomes. “I’m pretty sure they will,” he noted regarding the defense’s likelihood of succeeding on the grounds of public interest.

Background of the Case

Relli initiated the defamation suit in 2023, accusing A$AP Rocky and Tacopina of damaging his reputation by labeling him as deceitful. Rocky has consistently denied these allegations. The matter gained further traction following Rocky’s acquittal in a related criminal trial, during which witness testimony and recordings presented in court strengthened Rocky’s defense.

Judge Hammock has set an October date for hearing the anti-SLAPP motion in the defamation case. Regardless of whether Relli secures new legal representation, he is required to respond to the motion. Additionally, Relli’s civil assault case against Rocky stemming from a 2021 incident is scheduled to go to trial in January.

The Defense’s Perspective

Rocky’s legal team has argued that the statements made fall under the protection of free speech, highlighting Rocky’s public profile and the significant interest in his legal battles. Tacopina, on Rocky’s behalf, maintained that the defamation claims lack merit.

After Rocky’s victorious criminal trial, the rapper publicly expressed gratitude, underscoring his relief and appreciation for the jury’s decision that favored his narrative.
