Josh Brolin Reveals Secrets Behind His 12-Year Sobriety Journey

Josh Brolin is opening up about his 12-year journey of sobriety, revealing the vital practices that have helped him maintain a clear path. In a recent interview while promoting his new film Whalefall, the talented actor discussed both the challenges and triumphs of his sobriety journey.

The Daily Commitment to Sobriety

Brolin shared with The Telegraph that he commits to a daily routine that has become an essential part of his life. “I do a meeting every morning at 6 a.m. on Zoom,” the 58-year-old said, emphasizing the importance of this practice in keeping him grounded. He reflected on his past, noting, “Drinking got boring in the end. I woke up on the sidewalk outside my house, yet again, and it felt like a fork in the road. Which way was I going to go for the rest of my life?”

With a newfound appreciation for life, Brolin remarked, “I love being sober. I’m having way more fun now than I ever did drinking, and I never end up in jail, which is a real bonus.”

A Pivotal Moment in His Past

The actor recounted critical moments that led him to sobriety, including an impactful incident from his youth when he was only 19. “I was drunk and thought I was Bruce Lee,” he said, recalling how this led to his assaulting six police officers. He turned his life around after the court offered him a deal: attend rehab and get sober to reduce his sentence. “I ended up doing a few months in jail and then living in a halfway house with 15 other guys,” he revealed.

A Turning Point

Brolin had previously shared with The Independent about a particularly low point in 2013 that sparked his decision to seek help through rehab and Alcoholics Anonymous. “I shouldn’t have ended up where I ended up,” he said, emphasizing that survival did not equate to success in the conventional sense.

Navigating the Film Industry

While discussing his career, Brolin highlighted his extensive work in Hollywood, noting how he got his start in the 1985 classic The Goonies and has since starred in numerous acclaimed films, including Milk, Sicario, and the Dune franchise, as well as the Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame series, where he portrayed the infamous Thanos.

However, not every experience was straightforward. He described the intense process of transforming into the character Cable in Deadpool 2, where he underwent extensive prosthetic makeup application. “Most people can’t do it,” he commented, describing how the experience induced panic as tools were used to create a hard impression of his face. “When they do it, it gets hot and it hardens, and then slowly you start to lose your hearing. I remember I had a pad and I wrote at one point, ‘Mild panic,’” he explained, recalling how important it was to have the support of those around him during the process.

Through his commitment to sobriety and his enriching experiences in Hollywood, Josh Brolin continues to inspire others as he embraces both his past and present.
