Jordan Celebrates Milestone with First Busan Project Market Film

In a groundbreaking move for Jordanian cinema, filmmaker Darin J. Sallam is set to showcase her latest project, Churching of Women, at the prestigious Busan Asian Project Market. This entry marks a significant milestone as the first Jordanian project to be presented at this influential platform. By telling a compelling story set in the Levant during the colonial era, Sallam aims to shine a light on historical injustices while championing the representation of women on screen.

A Pioneering Narrative

Following the success of her debut feature, Farha, Sallam’s new endeavor, Churching of Women, delves into the life of a pioneering female author navigating a colonial era dominated by patriarchal power structures. Sallam highlighted her personal connection to the theme, stating, “It became personal to me when I felt the responsibility as a woman and as an Arab to make this film and to use cinema as my tool to do her justice.” The film aims to not only tell a historical tale but to evoke a broader discourse on gender and power.

Historical Backdrop and Personal Struggles

Set in the Levant region in 1938, which includes present-day Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan, the narrative follows Fadia, who is left grieving the loss of her parents. In a twist of fate, she finds herself committed to an asylum by her own cousin, who takes over her inheritance. This setting, rarely explored in cinema, allows Sallam to shed light on the significant yet overlooked impacts of colonialism across the region.

A Vision for Cinematic Impact

Sallam’s previous work with Farha garnered international acclaim, including Jordan’s first Asia Pacific Screen Award and a selection for the 95th Academy Awards. Her passion for storytelling is evident, as she stated, “I want to make films that move people and have value and that live on, and to do that I need to lead my work with honesty and to always challenge myself creatively.” Her dedication to authenticity and creativity aims to leave a lasting impression on audiences.

Producers’ Enthusiasm and Future Endeavors

Producers Deema Azar and Ayah Jardaneh voiced their support for Sallam’s vision, expressing, “‘Churching of Women’ aims to give justice to women and to their representation on screen.” The project not only seeks to portray a powerful narrative but also explores new storytelling and directing challenges that promise a fresh cinematic experience. As the team works to secure $4 million in financing and international co-production partnerships, the film is poised to set a new standard in Arab cinema.

The entry of Churching of Women into the Busan Asian Project Market signifies a bold step forward for Jordanian filmmaking, bringing untold stories and perspectives to the global stage. This milestone reflects a broader ambition to redefine women’s roles and narratives in cinema, one project at a time.
