John August and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel to Helm WGA Talks

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has announced a significant leadership choice for its upcoming negotiations, appointing seasoned industry figures John August and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel as co-chairs of the negotiating committee. This strategic move positions them at the forefront of pivotal discussions aimed at addressing the evolving needs of screenwriters, ensuring that their voices are effectively represented. The appointment highlights the WGA’s commitment to strong leadership as it prepares for critical negotiations next spring.

The New Leadership Team

John August, known for his influential role as co-host of the “Scriptnotes” podcast, will co-chair the committee alongside Danielle Sanchez-Witzel, who brings her expertise as the showrunner of Netflix‘s “Survival of the Thickest.” Their leadership is expected to steer the committee through complex negotiations as the WGA anticipates its first bargaining session since the significant writers strike of 2023. The current contract is set to expire on May 1, 2026, making these negotiations crucial.

Strategic Negotiations Ahead

Ellen Stutzman will once again serve as the chief negotiator, a role she held during the 2023 negotiations. As the executive director of WGA West, her experience and familiarity with the industry’s intricacies are vital. She will collaborate with Greg Hessinger, the new president of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, aiming to reach agreements that protect and advance writers’ interests.

A Fresh Team with Experience

Both August and Sanchez-Witzel participated in the 2023 negotiations, bringing valuable insights from past experiences. Unlike the previous negotiation, where Chris Keyser and David Goodman served as co-chairs, this new leadership team aims to tackle challenges with fresh perspectives. The WGA has also announced a committee of 29 members, featuring noted industry names like Mike Schur, Shawn Ryan, and Tom Fontana, indicating a diverse and robust lineup capable of navigating the issues at hand.

Focus on Key Issues

With a significant portion of the committee being new, including ten members from the 2023 team, the group reflects a blend of continuity and renewal. Michele Mulroney, who served as vice president of WGA West in 2023 and is now its president, adds an experienced voice to the team. A major focus for the committee will be the WGA pension and health plans, which face potential shortfalls. Addressing these concerns will be crucial in ensuring sustainable support for writers.

The 2026 committee includes John August, Danielle Sanchez-Witzel, Ali Barthwell, Yahlin Chang, Stan Chervin, and others, along with ex-officio members such as Michele Mulroney and Tom Fontana, promising a well-rounded approach to the upcoming negotiations.
