Jenna Ortega Urges a Break from Screens with 'Klara and the Sun'

Jenna Ortega is shining a spotlight on the importance of living in the moment as she promotes her new film, the dystopian sci-fi adaptation “Klara and the Sun.” At the world premiere held at the London Film Festival, Ortega emphasized the film’s message in an age increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence and technology.

Emphasizing Human Connection

Amidst the flashing cameras and anticipation, Ortega shared her thoughts with Variety. “I think we gotta put our focus on one another and put down the computers and phones,” she stated, urging attendees to remember to appreciate those around them. She looked radiant in a stunning yellow lace dress, accentuating her sincere message: “Remember to be present and to appreciate people while they’re standing right in front of you.”

A Glimpse into the Film’s World

Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s acclaimed 2021 novel, “Klara and the Sun” explores a future shaped by advanced genetic engineering, which has led to a rigidly divided society. Ortega portrays Klara, an artificial android companion designed to support a sick girl named Josie, played by Mia Tharia. Directed by Taika Waititi, the film also features a stellar cast, including Amy Adams as Josie’s mother, alongside Natasha Lyonne, Steve Buscemi, and others.

A Star-Studded Premiere

The premiere was a star-studded affair, with Waititi, Adams, Aran Murphy, and Lyonne gracing the red carpet alongside Ortega. They were joined by music star Rita Ora, author Ishiguro, and a surprise appearance by Florence Pugh, who dazzled in a blue floral gown. Pugh took a moment to greet Ortega and Adams before they posed for photos together, showcasing the camaraderie of the film’s cast and crew.

Diverse Perspectives and Unique Themes

In reflecting on the film’s impact, Adams noted that every audience member extracts a unique interpretation from the story: “That, to me, is a really successful film that communicates something different to each viewer.” Meanwhile, Ortega highlighted Klara’s distinct form of intelligence, explaining, “AI pulls all this information from the internet, and Klara gets all her information from the real world,” suggesting that the character embodies a more human-like quality.

Director’s Vision and Messaging

Echoing Ortega’s sentiments, Waititi encouraged the audience to disconnect from technology and focus on genuine human connections. “I would just like people to remember what friendship is, connect with people and just be,” he said. “Just be in the moment.”

Cultural Conversations on AI

Ishiguro pointed out how perceptions of AI have evolved dramatically since his novel’s release in 2021. “This film doesn’t address a lot of the anxieties that you and I may have right now about where we’re going with the technology,” he shared. He emphasized that this narrative is not about a malevolent AI, but rather presents a different kind of story altogether.

Future Projects and Collaborations

Ishiguro is also venturing into film projects beyond “Klara and the Sun,” revealing that he is collaborating with Tim Burton on a new project. While Ortega was not the link between the two, Ishiguro shared that he and Burton hit it off while discussing an original script he penned. “Genre-wise, it’s very hard to pigeonhole. It’s a Tim Burton film!” he remarked with enthusiasm.

Release Date

Fans can look forward to experiencing “Klara and the Sun,” which is set to hit theaters via Sony Pictures on October 23.
