Japan's Anime Industry Surges to $25 Billion Amid Global Rise

Japan’s anime market has reached unprecedented heights, hitting a record value of JPY3.84 trillion ($25.25 billion) in 2024, according to the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) report unveiled at TIFFCOM. The trend underscores a global surge in anime popularity that continues to fuel Japan’s content industry, marking a significant milestone as the industry embraces diverse international opportunities. The report highlights how this phenomenon transcends mere entertainment, branching into a robust cultural and economic force.

Global Surge Fuels Anime’s Expansion

The anime market’s monumental growth is highlighted by a 26% increase in overseas revenues, reaching JPY2.17 trillion ($14.27 billion), while domestic earnings saw a modest rise of 2.8%, amounting to JPY1.67 trillion ($10.98 billion). This represents the second-highest annual growth rate on record, trailing only 2019. With anime becoming a cornerstone of Japan’s cultural exports, the industry is positioned for continued growth and innovation.

The ongoing global boom is further emphasized by presentations from icons like “Godzilla” studio Toho Global, the “Gundam” franchise, and Annecy award-winning “ChaO.” These highlights at the festival demonstrate anime’s critical role in Japan’s expanding global content economy.

Industry Leaders Speak Out

AJA chair Kazuko Ishikawa, also president of Nippon Animation, emphasized the importance of anime as a pillar of Japan’s exports, noting efforts to enhance conditions for creators. The association aims to sustain this growth by supporting high-quality productions that captivate a global audience.

The anticipated Anime Industry Report 2025 will provide deeper insights, distinguishing between the broad “anime industry market” and the specific “anime production market.” Notably, the production market soared by 9.1% in 2024, reaching JPY466.2 billion ($3.06 billion), with overseas contributions steadily increasing.

Outlook and Strategic Growth

According to Masahiko Hasegawa, editor-in-chief of the AJA report, overseas markets outstripped domestic revenues for the first time in 2023, and this trend accelerated in 2024. Increasing international contracts now include theatrical, streaming, merchandising, and events, reflecting diverse revenue streams beyond content distribution.

The Japanese government is prioritizing anime as a vital industry, incorporating it into the Cool Japan initiative aiming to triple overseas content sales by 2033. The strategy focuses on exporting the entire anime ecosystem, encompassing merchandise, retail, and media collaborations.

With anime’s evolution into a comprehensive cultural economy, the industry is poised for sustainable global growth. “Anime is no longer just storytelling,” remarked Hasegawa. “It’s a full cultural economy — and that economy is rapidly going global.” As the global appetite for anime continues to expand, Japan’s market prepares for an exciting and dynamic future.
