Japanese Horror 'Wash Away' Highlights Berlin Market Lineup

In a thrilling development for horror enthusiasts, the Japanese film ‘Wash Away’ has been picked up by Korean sales company Finecut for international distribution. Making waves at the European Film Market in Berlin, this horror-thriller promises to captivate audiences with its unique blend of supernatural and psychological elements. The film explores the depths of human despair, wrapped in an intriguing narrative that taps into Japan’s cultural and economic issues.

A Sinister Tale Unfolds

‘Wash Away’ centers on two vacationers lured into a seemingly idyllic lakeside retreat. However, they soon encounter dark forces tied to local legends, where water is believed to have soul-cleansing powers. First-time feature director Takuya Miyahara uses this chilling backdrop to delve into the struggles of Japan’s Satori Generation, who are faced with economic and demographic challenges. The film explores how overwhelming despair can push individuals to disconnect from reality, inviting viewers into a world of denial and danger.

The Minds Behind the Horror

Director Takuya Miyahara, who previously made his mark with the short film “Suck” at the 46th Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, brings his refined storytelling skills to ‘Wash Away’. Having sharpened his craft through the Sundance Institute/NHK Award and workshops in Los Angeles and New York, Miyahara is set to bring a fresh perspective to the horror genre.

Promising Cast and Production

Leading the cast is Jingi Irie, known for his role in “Tokyo Revengers 2: Bloody Halloween – Destiny,” portraying a suspicious vacationer at the enigmatic resort. Opposite him, Makoto Tanaka of “Michikusa” takes on the role of his increasingly distant partner, as the story’s unsettling truths come to light. The production company behind this project, Nothing New, has a strong track record, with past works such as “Happy Eyescream” and “Diary of the Ghost” making waves at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Strategic Moves by Finecut

Currently in post-production, ‘Wash Away’ sees Finecut planning to showcase early footage at the European Film Market, drumming up anticipation among potential buyers. Part of Finecut’s diverse Berlin lineup, the film joins other intriguing projects such as “The Day She Returns” by Hong Sangsoo and the 3D animation “Long Long Night.” Each selected project reflects Finecut’s commitment to unique storytelling and innovative filmmaking.

As ‘Wash Away’ prepares to make its international debut, audiences can anticipate a horror experience that is as thought-provoking as it is thrilling, shedding light on real-world issues through its haunting narrative.
