Hurricane Melissa Forces Jamrock Reggae Cruise to Alter Course

With Hurricane Melissa rapidly approaching Jamaica, the Marleys’ Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise has been forced to reroute its iconic journey. The cruise, originally set to dock in Jamaica, will now chart a course for Cozumel, Mexico. This change ensures the safety of passengers and artists, highlighting the cruise’s resilience in maintaining its vibrant reggae culture amidst unforeseen challenges.

Adjusting the Sails: New Routes Amidst Rough Weather

Originally scheduled from October 27 to November 1, the Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise planned stops in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. However, as Hurricane Melissa threatened these ports, organizers promptly altered the itinerary. The cruise will still embark from Miami, but now offers passengers a Caribbean experience in Cozumel, ensuring safety and continued enjoyment.

An announcement on Instagram confirmed the decision: “The Fleet Captain has finished his review, and has determined Cozumel, Mexico as the safest course for the 2025 Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise!” They also shared the logistical hurdles faced due to airport closures in Jamaica which hampered artist travel, emphasizing their efforts to maintain the festival’s characteristic energetic vibe.

A Celebratory Voyage

Marking its 10th anniversary, the cruise is a showcase of reggae legacy featuring stars like Damian and Stephen Marley, as well as the next Marley generation: Yohan, Skip, YG, and Mystic. Artists like Shabba Ranks and Super Cat add to the stellar lineup. This year also honors the 20th anniversary of Damian Marley’s Grammy-winning “Welcome to Jamrock,” tying the event and music in a powerful celebration.

Gathering Storms: Navigating Hurricane Melissa

As Hurricane Melissa escalates to a Category 5 storm with winds of 175 mph, experts warn of potential flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage in Jamaica. Forecasters anticipate the hurricane’s landfall by Tuesday morning. In response, major international airports in Jamaica have been shut, prompting many Caribbean cruises, including Disney and Carnival, to alter their paths to circumvent the storm’s fury.

The Marleys’ Jamrock Reggae Cruise might have changed course, but its spirit remains unyielded, promising an unforgettable experience steeped in reggae rhythms and island culture.
