Gus Dapperton Revitalizes 'You Get What You Give' for Journeys Campaign

Gus Dapperton, a rising star in the music world, has taken on the challenge of reimagining the iconic New Radicals’ hit “You Get What You Give” for a fresh campaign by the popular retail brand Journeys. This undertaking is part of Journeys’ “Life on Loud” initiative, which aims to inspire individuals to embrace their unique style and express themselves with confidence. Through this collaboration, Dapperton not only pays homage to a beloved classic but also infuses it with his distinctive flair.

A Modern Twist on a Classic

Journeys’ latest campaign sees Dapperton revamping “You Get What You Give” with a new vibrant energy. Released as part of the “Life on Loud” campaign, the song’s remake and its accompanying lively music video embody the daring spirit that has defined Journeys for years. The brand encourages shoppers to embrace their style unapologetically, promoting individuality and creative freedom.

Gus Dapperton’s Creative Process

For Dapperton, recreating such a celebrated track was both thrilling and intimidating. “It was a nerve-racking undertaking making this song my own,” he shared with Rolling Stone. The artist breathes new life into the classic by enhancing the beat and incorporating a disco-lite vibe, complete with funky guitar elements and distinct hand claps. Despite the alterations, Dapperton remained faithful to the original’s vocal energy, aiming to craft something that felt both fresh and nostalgic.

Nostalgia and Inspiration

Originally reaching only number 36 on the Billboard charts, “You Get What You Give” has garnered a loyal following over the years. Dapperton, who was just a child when the song was first released, recalls growing up with it thanks to his father’s extensive CD collection. “It just captures a moment in time so perfectly that is nostalgic to me even though I didn’t necessarily live through it,” he notes.

Collaboration and Impact

The project also rekindled collaboration between New Radicals frontman Gregg Alexander and bandmate Danielle Brisebois. Reflecting on the experience, Alexander expressed excitement about working with Dapperton and iconic director Stillz. “New Radicals always wondered what a 2020s spin on our chaotic Nineties ‘You Get What You Give’ mall music video might look and sound like,” he says.

Beyond the music, Dapperton’s connection to Journeys is deeply personal, recalling memories of seeking out skate shoes from their stores. “The song was basically the soundtrack to my youth,” he adds, appreciating its balance of raw honesty and energetic fun.

Through this creative venture, Gus Dapperton not only captures the essence of “You Get What You Give” but also establishes a meaningful connection with listeners and Journeys customers alike, celebrating the spirit of individuality and self-expression.
