Green Day fans were in for a treat when the iconic punk rock band performed “Haushinka” during their recent concert in Santiago, Chile. This marked the first time the group played the song in 26 years, creating a momentous occasion for both the band and their devoted followers. “Haushinka,” a lesser-known track from the 1997 album Nimrod, was brought to life again in front of an ecstatic crowd, resonating with fans who have cherished the track for decades.
Dusting Off a Classic
In a thrilling set at Parque Estadio Nacional, Green Day surprised their audience by including “Haushinka” in their lineup. Billie Joe Armstrong, the band’s charismatic frontman, acknowledged the rarity of the event. “I think that’s the first time we do it since 1993, maybe,” Armstrong said onstage. He was slightly off on the dates as Nimrod was released in 1997, but his sentiment underlined the specialness of the moment. “And we do it because Santiago is special to us,” he added, highlighting the unique connection between the band and their Chilean fans.
A Nod to Nimrod
The performance of “Haushinka” was a nod to their beloved album Nimrod, from which Green Day frequently plays hits like “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” and “Hitchin’ a Ride.” Last year, to celebrate the album’s 25th anniversary, the band released demos from the recording sessions, featuring tracks such as “You Irritate Me,” “Tre Polka,” and a cover of Elvis Costello’s “Alison.” The revival of “Haushinka” adds another layer to this celebration, connecting past and present in an evocative live performance.
The Saviors Tour
Green Day’s performance of “Haushinka” was part of their expansive two-year The Saviors Tour, which is currently taking them across South America. After Santiago, the band is scheduled to electrify audiences in Buenos Aires on Sept. 3, São Paulo on Sept. 7, Curitiba, Brazil on Sept. 12, and Paraguay on Sept. 15. The tour represents a journey through diverse musical landscapes, reconnecting Green Day with their fans across the globe.
The Road Ahead
As Green Day continues to attract massive audiences, their return to the United States will see them perform at various music festivals before wrapping up the tour with a grand finale at Yaamava Theatre in San Bernardino, California on Sept. 30. The unexpected performance of “Haushinka” not only delighted fans in Chile but also set a thrilling precedent for the shows to come, reinforcing the enduring bond between the band and their worldwide audience.
