Grammys Acknowledge Need for Asian Music Category Improvements

As the anticipation builds towards the 2027 Grammy Awards, the Recording Academy is facing scrutiny surrounding its new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category. This discussion gained momentum after global superstars BTS announced that they would not be submitting their latest album, ARIRANG, for consideration. In light of this, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. initially stood firm in his defense of the category, which he described as a way to celebrate the “depth, diversity and extraordinary growth of pop artistry coming out of Asia.”

Response to Criticism

In a statement released on August 14, Mason acknowledged the ongoing feedback from artists in the Asian music community. “The Grammy organization exists to serve all music people, and part of that is working to ensure that no voice or community gets overlooked or misunderstood,” he said. He emphasized that despite the Academy’s intentions of inclusivity, some artists feel that the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category does not adequately represent their music. “As a musician myself, I take that to heart,” he added.

Commitment to Inclusivity

Mason further expressed the Academy’s commitment to evolving alongside the needs of musicians. “Over the past six years, the Academy has shown that it can act decisively and move swiftly to meet the needs of our music community,” he stated. The management and Board are dedicated to ensuring that all artists feel seen and heard through their actions.

Understanding BTS’s Position

While BTS did not directly criticize the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, their announcement of not participating in the upcoming awards reflected a broader sentiment. The group stated their “hope that music can be heard and loved by itself rather than being divided by region or language.” This highlights an ongoing conversation about the categorization of music and how it may impact artists globally.

Category Description and Upcoming Events

The Best Asian Pop Music Performance category was introduced in June, alongside four other new genre-specific categories. According to the Academy, this category recognizes “artistic excellence in Asian pop music performances originating from or widely recognized within Asian markets, including but not limited to K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop, with meaningful use of one or more Asian languages.”

As the clock ticks down to the 2027 Grammy Awards, online entry for submissions will close on August 21. First-round voting is set to begin on October 12, with the official announcement of nominees scheduled for November 16. Mark your calendars, as the awards ceremony will take place on February 7, 2026.
