Global Trailer for India’s Oscar Entry ‘Gondhal’ Released

India has taken a significant step in its pursuit of international recognition with the debut of the global trailer for “Gondhal,” a Marathi-language thriller vying for the international feature Oscar at the 99th Academy Awards. This marks an exciting new phase in the film’s awards campaign.

About the Film

Directed by Santosh Davakhar, “Gondhal” is his first feature film and was selected from a competitive pool of 33 entries for India’s submission. The narrative unfolds over the course of a single night in rural Maharashtra during a Gondhal, a folk ritual characterized by song, dance, and theatrical storytelling.

The Storyline

The film follows Suman, portrayed by Ishita Deshmukh, a young wife trapped in a stifling marriage. In her quest for autonomy, she manipulates the obsession of her lover, Sarjerao (Nishad Bhoir), leading to a conflict between her desires and societal norms. This tension ultimately culminates in a tragic ending.

Cast and Crew

The cast also features Kishor Kadam, Yogesh Sohoni, and Anuj Prabhu, under the cinematography of Amalendu Chaudhary, who presents the story through an impressive unbroken 25-minute opening take. The musical score, composed by the legendary Ilaiyaraaja, enhances the film’s emotional depth.

Director’s Vision

Davakhar expressed his desire to transcend traditional narratives that often dominate global perceptions of Indian cinema, stating, “Global perceptions of Indian cinema are often shaped by narratives of poverty and caste conflict – important realities, but not the complete expression of India. India is also a civilization of extraordinary cultural wealth, sustained by traditions, music, and collective memory. I created this film to bring one such powerful tradition to the global screen through a culturally authentic and universal cinematic language.”

Acknowledgment and Production

The film has garnered critical acclaim, winning the Silver Peacock for Best Director at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), where jury members likened it to “a Shakespearean fable set in a real world.” Davakhar co-produced the film with Diksha Davakhar, his partner at Davakhar Films, a production company dedicated to supporting regional stories with high-quality craftsmanship in various cinematic elements.
