Gigi Hadid's Surprising Rapunzel Tryout Before 'Tangled' Delay

In a surprising revelation, supermodel Gigi Hadid shared that she auditioned for the coveted role of Rapunzel in Disney’s anticipated live-action “Tangled” remake. While the project is now on hold following the underperformance of the live-action “Snow White,” Hadid expressed pride in her audition process, marking a potential pivot into acting. Her potential role as Rapunzel adds depth to her career, which already features voice roles and film cameos. This article explores Hadid’s journey, the project’s current status, and Disney’s live-action strategy.

Gigi Hadid’s Surprising Audition for Rapunzel

Gigi Hadid revealed in a recent Vogue cover story that she auditioned for the role of Rapunzel in Disney’s live-action “Tangled” remake before production was paused. Known primarily for her modeling career, Hadid is contemplating a broader entry into acting, having appeared in films such as “Ocean’s 8.” To prepare for her Rapunzel audition, she even took singing lessons.

“What do we do in this job anymore that scares us?” Hadid mused to cover co-star Kendall Jenner, expressing her satisfaction with the experience. “I was really proud of my scene. The singing… I knew they were going to go with a real singer, but I’ll show you my audition scene later,” she said confidently.

Setbacks in Disney’s Live-Action Plans

The development of the live-action “Tangled” was first announced in December 2024, with filmmaker Michael Gracey in talks to direct and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson writing the script. However, Variety reported that the project was put on hold after the “Snow White” remake, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, failed to perform at the box office, not reaching $90 million domestically. Despite this setback, Disney achieved success with its “Lilo & Stitch” remake, which grossed over $1 billion globally.

The Legacy of “Tangled”

The original “Tangled” film, released in 2010, tells the story of Rapunzel, a princess voiced by Mandy Moore, who finds freedom with the help of Flynn Rider, played by Zachary Levi. The film was a box office hit, earning $592 million globally and inspiring the Oscar-nominated song “When Will My Life Begin.” Its success extended beyond the film with a short sequel, “Tangled Ever After,” and the TV series “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.”

Future Aspirations

Other actors also expressed interest in the “Tangled” live-action roles. Corey Mylchreest, known for “Queen Charlotte,” mentioned his audition for Flynn Rider, humorously expressing his insecurity about his singing skills. “I think I can say this now because I don’t think it’s happening anymore, but I auditioned for ‘Tangled,’” Mylchreest confessed to Seventeen Magazine. Despite an amusing recount of his failed attempt, he respected the musical requirements for the role.

Looking forward, Disney plans to release the live-action “Moana” on July 10, continuing its strategy of adapting animated classics. While the “Tangled” remake remains paused, Gigi Hadid’s potential transition into acting demonstrates her willingness to embrace new challenges, leaving fans eager to see where her career might lead next.
