Chinese comedy “Johnny Keep Walking!” is set to entertain French audiences with a remake by Master Movies. The film’s success in China and its satirical take on corporate dynamics captivated global interest, leading to this rare adaptation of a Chinese film for a Western market. This exclusive acquisition underscores the international appeal of Chinese cinema.
Remake Rights Acquired by Master Movies
French production company Master Movies has secured rights to remake the 2023 Chinese hit “Johnny Keep Walking!” from Tiger Pictures Entertainment. This acquisition stands out as one of the uncommon instances where a mainland Chinese film is being adapted into a foreign language remake.
Original Film’s Success and Themes
The original film, directed by Dong Runian, is a sharp satire on corporate bureaucracy and office politics, co-written by Dong and Ying Luojia. The film stars comedian Da Peng and features a narrative centered around a technician unexpectedly promoted to a managerial position due to clerical errors and mishaps in a bribery scheme. Known in Chinese as “The Annual Company Party Can’t Be Stopped,” the film became a sleeper hit, earning RMB1.292 billion ($186 million) domestically and $995,000 in international markets.
International Recognition and Adaptation
Owen Young of Tiger Pictures Entertainment described “Johnny Keep Walking!” as a significant achievement for Chinese cinema, illustrating its growing influence and storytelling reach. The film’s adaptation into a French version reflects the universal appeal of its themes, which resonate across cultural boundaries.
Master Movies’ Vision for the French Remake
Lola and Marco Pacchioni, directors of Master Movies, expressed excitement about the project, stating that the film’s portrayal of corporate life is both humorous and insightful. They believe it aligns perfectly with their focus on character-driven stories that offer contemporary societal insights, aiming to captivate French audiences with this adaptation.
The original’s exploration of workplace toxicity and bureaucracy offers a rich foundation for cross-cultural interpretation, according to the film’s Chinese producers. This venture marks a strategic shift for Tiger Pictures from merely distributing Chinese films internationally to managing and developing international intellectual property.
