Former Employees Sue Paramount and Ex-Exec Over Alleged Misconduct

In a recent legal development that has drawn significant attention, Paramount Pictures and a former high-ranking executive are facing lawsuits filed by two former employees. These women, who have chosen to remain anonymous as “Jane Doe,” allege that the executive engaged in sexual assault and harassment during their tenure at the company. The case underscores ongoing concerns about workplace culture and accountability within the entertainment industry.

Allegations Against the Former Executive

The lawsuits specifically name Patrick Smith, who previously served as the senior VP of print production at Paramount Pictures. Both women worked under Smith, either directly at Paramount or at a vendor associated with the company, XYi Design. The allegations point to a history of misconduct, including inappropriate behavior and emotional abuse. Despite numerous complaints, the lawsuits claim that Smith was allowed to resign rather than being terminated, reportedly leaving his record unblemished and potentially retaining benefits.

Details of the Lawsuits

The complaints, filed in the Superior Court of California’s County of Los Angeles, highlight the troubling experiences of both plaintiffs. The first Jane Doe began her role at XYi Design fresh out of college in 2016 and recounts several instances of sexual assault perpetrated by Smith, including coercive and unwanted physical encounters. These incidents reportedly occurred in multiple locations, including his car and places within Paramount’s offices.

Throughout 2017, this first plaintiff alleges that Smith’s inappropriate behavior continued and escalated, marked by unwanted sexual advances and emotional manipulation. Similarly, the second Jane Doe, who started at Paramount in 2017, experienced verbal abuse and sexual harassment during her tenure. Her lawsuit asserts that Smith’s harassment persisted even after her maternity leave, further complicating her professional responsibilities and working environment.

Legal and Corporate Responses

Representatives for both Paramount Pictures and Patrick Smith have not responded to requests for comments regarding the lawsuits. The legal team representing the Jane Does includes the law firm Ivie McNeill Wyatt Purcell & Diggs, with Eugene “Chip” Matthews also advising the first plaintiff. Despite Smith’s abrupt resignation following an internal investigation, the lawsuits underline a systemic failure to address or prevent the alleged misconduct effectively.

The narrative portrayed in these lawsuits has brought to light significant questions about corporate responses to harassment allegations and the mechanisms in place to protect employees in the entertainment industry. As the legal proceedings unfold, the focus has shifted to how Paramount Pictures and the broader industry will respond to these grave accusations of sexual assault and harassment.
