Flea’s Solo Debut: Honora

Flea recently appeared on The Tonight Show to perform his take on Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You.” As part of a live band and orchestra, Flea delivered an ambient, instrumental version featuring both bass and trumpet. This jazz-inspired track is a fresh reimagining from his debut solo album, Honora, which is set for release later this week. Channeling the spirit of Ocean’s 2012 hit from Channel Orange, Flea’s rendition brings a unique twist to a beloved song.

On the show’s platform, the artist shared, “When that record came out, it really blew me away. I listened to it ten million times. It was something I just couldn’t stop listening to. I loved it so much and still do. Just one of those real watershed moment records for me. ‘Thinkin Bout You’ is one of the many great songs on that record, and I thought it would be fun to play on trumpet.”

A Conversation with Fallon

During his visit, Flea also sat down with host Jimmy Fallon to discuss the origins of his album and his enduring love for jazz. Entering the stage with his characteristic flair, Flea shared stories from his past, including his early passion for the trumpet. “I was in love with it,” he recalled, expressing admiration for jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, whom he met as a child.

Flea reminisced about his transition to the bass during high school, admitting that despite focusing largely on bass, his affection for the trumpet never waned. “It’s always alive in my head and my heart,” he said. Revisiting the instrument more seriously in recent years led him to decide, “I’m going to play trumpet every day, no matter what, and after a couple of years of doing it I’m going to make a record and what comes, comes.”
