'Fantastic Four' Stars Open to Reprising Roles in 'Secret Wars'

Original “Fantastic Four” stars Ioan Gruffudd and Michael Chiklis have expressed their openness to returning as Mr. Fantastic and the Thing in the upcoming “Avengers: Secret Wars.” During their “Back to the Baxter Building” panel at New York Comic Con, both actors reflected on their experiences and the challenges they faced, particularly with costume transformations and mastering characters’ nuances. Their eagerness to return has sparked excitement among fans, highlighting the enduring appeal of their original performances.

The Challenges of Becoming Superheroes

Michael Chiklis shared the intense process of transforming into the Thing, recalling the claustrophobic nature of the suit. “Once they locked the Thing with the glue, I couldn’t get out of it,” he explained, detailing the five-hour ordeal to get into the costume. The heavy latex chest piece added to the discomfort, causing his body temperature to skyrocket and occasionally triggering panic despite not being generally claustrophobic.

Chiklis even sought help from a psychiatrist to manage the stress. “She gave me a bunch of different things to get me out of my head and into the room,” he said, recounting moments where he needed immediate relief, leading to lengthy delays on set. Despite these challenges, his dedication to the role remained steadfast, reflecting the commitment required to bring such iconic characters to life.

Mastering Mr. Fantastic’s Voice

Ioan Gruffudd discussed the intricate work involved in perfecting Mr. Fantastic’s American accent. Though immersed in American culture, Gruffudd emphasized the significance of finding the character’s voice authentically. “That comes from reading the script over and over and sitting down with the dialect coach,” he explained. Capturing the essence of Mr. Fantastic, a character marked by intelligence and honor, was critical to his performance.

Gruffudd’s effort to balance the accent with Mr. Fantastic’s persona paid off, resulting in a portrayal he is proud of. His dedication underscores the importance of an actor’s immersion into their character beyond mere appearances.

Reuniting for “Avengers: Secret Wars”

With Marvel’s “Avengers: Secret Wars” in development, both actors have shown enthusiasm about potential reprises. The audience’s cheers during the panel were deafening as Chiklis uttered his iconic line, “It’s clobberin’ time,” affirming his willingness to revisit the role.

Reflecting on their time together, Gruffudd and Chiklis fondly recalled the bond formed with castmates on the set of “Fantastic Four” and its sequel. Gruffudd remarked, “You do become a family,” emphasizing the camaraderie built over months of filming and global promotions. The shared experiences, challenges, and triumphs solidified their connection, creating lasting memories beyond the screen.

Their potential return in “Avengers: Secret Wars” not only promises a nostalgic reunion but also a continuation of the legacy they established in the original films.
